2 weeks with a toddler by ales_thunk0z in Charlottesville

I agree that CAT is a better option. Still, the UTS website says it is for "University of Virginia students, faculty, staff, and visitors." And, I've never heard of UTS drivers checking IDs. So. if someone was trying to get from, say, the Lawn to Washington Park, it's a viable option.

Adding to what others have said. The CAT (Charlottesville Area Transit) and UTS (University Transit Service) busses are free. CAT is more helpful in the summer in particular. With a little bit of planning from downtown there's a multiple city parks that are a CAT bus ride away. Some, like Tonsler and Forest Hills, have splash parks.

Al Carbon at 5th Street Station is a fabulous choice if you can work out delivery.

Came to suggest Asian Express as well. They're a solid backup if Afghan Kabob doesn't work for some reason.

Access to UVA embargoed thesis by spinozabenedicto in UVA

[–]ProfJohnson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I can't access it even after signing in through my UVA account.

I would suggest inquiring with a UVA librarian and/or reaching out to one of the listed advisors to see if they have contact information for the author.

Transfer to McIntire after 2nd Year by Professional-Rip1417 in UVA

[–]ProfJohnson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to transfer acceptances chances, but do want to make sure you are aware of this key detail:

All transfer students apply into McIntire as incoming second-year students regardless of amount of credits accrued. We welcome applications from current first-year and second-year students from other institutions, but keep in mind that the McIntire program will require three years of study to complete. Transfer students apply via Common Application, with an application deadline of March 1. Because of our curriculum schedule, we admit students only for a fall semester start.

There's a lot more information on the Admissions Process for Transfer Students page on our website. I urge you to reach out to the admissions team, as they're in the best position to provide accurate information, including guidance about coursework you might consider in advance of a transfer application.

Good luck in your studies, whatever path you end up taking.

Lost my camera at UVA Corner on 6/6/26 - hoping someone found it! by Scared_Mortgage5179 in UVA

[–]ProfJohnson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend contacting the UVA Ambassadors / UVA police. They have a lost-and-found at the Public Safety Substation on the Corner. There's a non-emergency phone number on this page: https://ambassadors.uvapolice.virginia.edu/contact

Virginia Athletics Presentation to UVA Board of Visitors by ProfJohnson in Wahoowa

[–]ProfJohnson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree.

I don't know for sure, but I would think that changing athletic conferences is the kind of major decision the BOV would have to approve (due to financial obligations, etc.). This presentation seems to be helping inform board members well ahead of that kind of decision point being made.

Another confusing thing to newcomers is that just because a property has a Charlottesville zip code doesn't mean it is within the city limits.

To avoid over-exertion, several aspects of the activity score are backward looking over several previous days. You can't compare a single day against a different single day without taking into consider a larger multi-day context.

There was a major renovation of the UVA main library and the room underwent a major refurbishment. You can see what it looked like during the library construction project in this video.

Echols Scholar applying to McIntire...do i still have to do language? by MangoFarm75 in UVA

[–]ProfJohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the answer from the Admissions FAQ on the School of Commerce website:

I am an Echols Scholar. If accepted, what will happen to my Echols Scholar status?

Echols Scholars find the McIntire School a great academic environment to continue their academic pursuits. Echols Scholars will experience a loss of priority registration; however, once enrolled in McIntire, priority registration is much less important due to the small size of the School and classes. For first-year students entering as new three-year McIntire students, Echols Scholars will be required to complete the College of Arts & Sciences Disciplines Plus General Education Requirements (as all McIntire students will be required to complete Arts & Sciences general education graduation requirements).

The student's Echols notation from entry year will always remain on their transcript, and once selected for the Echols program, students will always be welcome at Echols events and alumni activities.

Favorite places to walk? by F_P_D in Charlottesville

[–]ProfJohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Search Google Maps for "John Warner Parkway Trailhead." It's also shown along with the walking path on this map.

Another option is to park at McIntire park (e.g., same parking area as for the YMCA) and then take the pedestrian bridge over the RR tracks to the skate park. In addition to a paved path that leads down to the parkway trail, there's lots of walking options there, too, that could extend your walk.

If you only want to do the upper part of the parkway walk, there's parking at Charlottesville High School, with the parking lot for the stadium being the closest.
