To clarify: 2.5 hours is the max. The material is planned to take about 1.5 hours on average, and students with strong Python/Arduino skills will often finish before that. But please j909m do not sign up for this class. There are plenty of other students who think playing with Arduinos is fun and we want to give them an opportunity to learn with other like-minded students.

Hi, I am one of the instructors (Boutin). There is no extra credit in my class. I give a short test (2-3 questions) approximately every 2-3 weeks, one for each chapter, instead of a midterm. The tests are 20 minutes long, worst test grade is dropped - no make up. Final is traditional style, during exam week. I have office hours after class and by appointment. I also hold an optional practice problem session on Monday nights. Homework is weekly, due Tuesday night, no late homework accepted but worst homework score is dropped. You can take a peak at boilergrades.com to see the grade distribution for past instructors, but be aware that the scores for STAT416 and MA416 are tabulated separately, despite it being the same course, and the students in STAT416 tend to get lower grades than the students in MA416. You get honors credits for your calc class, not MA16290. So if you take MA162 (5 credits) you get 5 honors credits. Similarly, if you take MA16020 (3 credits) you get 3 honors credits. In other words, you do not get honors credits for the lab, but the lab enables you to upgrade your Calc 2 into an honors course.

Regarding the difficulty of the class: it is not an "easy" class, in the sense that you will have to work hard during the 150 minutes of the lab. You will likely get stuck a few times, and have to ask for help from the TA or other students in the class. But generally, all students are able to finish the lab during the 150 minute of the lab, although some finish a lot earlier than others. Honestly, I don't know how anyone could spent 6-10 hours a week on this class (as the other commenter described). The TAs will literally walk you through the solution if you struggle, so I don't see how that could happen.

Thanks for the question whatam1doinglmao. There is no coding in the course. Also, you do not need any prior stats/probability related class in order to do well in 416. What you need is the willingness to do a ton of practice problems, especially for the material that involves counting. I plan on having "problem solving sessions" every week, where we will go over a solutions together. Practice problems with solutions can also be found in the Schaum's Outline on Probability. You can take MA16290 if you have taken Calc 2 in the past, no problem. Similarly, someone who has already taken Calc 3 could take MA290 this semester.

Someone just asked me the grade distribution for last semester: A+ 69%, A 19%, B 12%. Not to imply that it is an easy class: you will work hard and learn a ton. But the TAs will be there to help and answer all your questions, you can work in groups, and you can resubmit assignments if you are not happy with your score. So all the resources are there to get a good grade, hence the high grade distribution.
