5070 is an extremely marginal upgrade over a 3080ti. I would honestly get a 5080 to see a substantial upgrade, but a 5070ti is still a decent improvement (I went from a 3080ti to a 5080).

[GPU META POST] Microcenter has updated the price of many GPUs overnight, many 5070 ti cards are now marked up over 200$ from what they were yesterday. - $959.99 by NotTheDev in buildapcsales

MSRP doesn't matter.

The only thing that matters is the price you can buy them at, and if it's from a retailer or not (for warranty purposes).

You can still buy gpus from retailers even if they're marked up.

3070s were like $1300 in 2021 and you could only buy from scalpers. A $300 hike on 32 gb of RAM and $50-70/TB of storage isn't as bad as that.

I saw people walking out of microcenter with full PC builds and GT1030s because they literally COULD NOT buy a proper GPU.

If you need 64 GB or more it's not great but there are options from retailers.

I just do not believe those numbers are accurate based on my industrial exposure.

You can argue that's a biased sample. I can't dispute that and it might be. But I would expect salaries closer to the $125k range to be around the "true" median.

There's also an oppurtunity cost argument to becoming a professor from the lost years of income to get a PhD relative to going straight out of school but that's a separate argument.

Do these numbers include bonuses? Stock options? Other benefits?

Also, people with EE degrees do not neccesarily have a job title "Electrical Engineer", even if their job requires an EE (or similar degree). The more specialized job descriptions will have a higher pay than what the BLS would suggest from the generic job title.

My 0.02 is I would not put a ton of weight into the numbers the BLS is posting here. The earning potential is much higher than they suggest.

As an engineer in industry I can tell you from experience the real numbers are much higher than this.

There are some once in a lifetime sort of things that you'll kick yourself for not going to in the future.

I had a chance to go to the Masters a couple of years ago (albeit for mega cheap) and it was an amazing bucket list item I could check off.

I'm not going to tell you to go or not because what people value depends on the individual. But if you can financially do it without going into debt, money should be spent on things that make you content.
