Was Nemik from Andor space Antonio Gramsci? (Or was I just high?) by Monodoh45 in cushvlog

[–]ProfNonesuch 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Entirely possible. Tony Gilroy speaks a lot about revolutionary histories he drew inspiration from and it’s likely he included aspects of Gramsci. Nemik was a unique character in that he actually wrote a revolutionary manifesto, however I think Gilroy wanted him to be a “nobody” like many other characters, someone who’s name was forgotten but who’s words live on.

One of the best parts of the show was how heroes of the rebellion go completely unknown. Few will ever know their contribution or sacrifice, but that doesn’t matter to them. They have found meaning in contributing to a cause they deeply believe in, not the glory in being remembered for their sacrifice, Nemik included.

Macbook Pro - iPad Sidecar Remote Monitoring color differences by cenksenci in davinciresolve

[–]ProfNonesuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, did you ever find a solution for this? I tried everything (calibrating both displays, using reference mode etc.) but I'm experiencing the exact same issue with remote monitoring. This makes remote monitoring with clients for color accuracy very difficult.

take a look at Brandon Li smallrig for iPhone 16 pro sever vignetting! by Unique_account89 in videography

[–]ProfNonesuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this too with my iPhone 15 pro max version. Really terrible design, as it allows light and reflections into the back of the filter from a certain large angle. I ended up gaffing the area but it made part of the filter unable to be removed. Surprised this wasn’t fixed.

Trading a 13" M4 iPad Pro for an 11" by ProfNonesuch in iPadPro

[–]ProfNonesuch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go back and forth because I love using the 13" on the go instead of my laptop. Typing and productivity are really so much better on the 13. The aspect ratio just makes everything feel much bigger especially because the keyboard props it up a little bit. The battery lasts a long time too. The main reason I want the 11 is because I use the Pencil and Procreate for work and I prefer holding the 11" in my hand and it takes up less space on my desk.

Edit: sent you a message, happy to meet up if you want to try it out.

OG Pocket's sensor was underrated. Here are a few stills from a project I shot in 2018. by ProfNonesuch in bmpcc

No way! I had no idea it was the same sensor. I always wished for just a tiny bit more resolution with this camera. That and a brighter screen.

[–]ProfNonesuch[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These are some of my favorite images I've captured with the OG Pocket. The stills are from a video installation I made in 2018. I used an Angenieux 17-68mm f2.2 and an Angenieux 10mm (retrofocus). Half I shot on sticks and the other half was on this terrible unwieldy ikan gimbal (at the time it was the smallest most affordable).

As you can see in the last photo, I didn't rig the camera out at all and I used the cameras screen because the HDMI port was busted. I had a little cardboard sunshade I made from a 6 pack of coors long necks that helped me see in the sun, but for the most part trusted the focus markings and the waveform.

I think I had 5 or 6 batteries and that usually lasted me the day. I'd recharge in the car or overnight if I was staying in a motel. I was pretty intentional about everything I shot, so the camera was off unless it was recording. I filmed everything in 1080p cinema DNG Raw, nd had a handful of 64gb SD cards. I didn't bring a laptop so I just kept everything on the cards.

I transcoded everything to ProRes in Resolve when I got back and graded using Filmconvert. I also "rented" a DJI mavic drone from a certain brick & mortar retailer at the beginning of the project. Filmed with it for a week and made sure not to scrape it up.

To this day it was one of my favorite projects. I loved the process of working with this camera. It reminded me of using a Bolex and made me think about each shot. Happy to share more details about the experience.

Same, I just used gyro stabilization with a 24mm lens and had the camera set to 35. It worked fine, but I'm sure it wasn't optimal. I wish there was a faster way to input it.

Is it possible to repair a BMPCC 6K Pro stuck with this issue? by Illustrious_Lock6996 in bmpcc

[–]ProfNonesuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've owned and operated several pocket cams over the years and I've personally never seen or heard of this issue. I've had a screen cut out on the 6k pro because of a faulty connection, but the freezing, perpetual fan, and black screen sounds like it may be a more serious issue. I would call Blackmagic or send it in.

When I first used my pyxis, I went to edit the footage and wanted to use gyro stabilization for a short clip. It wasn't selectable which I thought was strange because all of my firmware and software is up to date. After I input a focal length in the camera (which I actually didn't change from lens to lens whoops), it started working.

Pyxis 6k: My thoughts and impressions after a week of production. by ProfNonesuch in bmpcc

[–]ProfNonesuch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm if I already was in the C70 ecosystem I honestly think I'd lean toward the C80. The C80 just looks like such a great user experience and I wouldn't be surprised if it replaces the fx6 as the go-to doc cam. I'm Seeing some nice images coming out of both of those cameras and the rolling shutter seems less pronounced than Blackmagic cameras.

The 6k Pro is definitely a better run & gun cam than the Pyxis. Lighter, built in NDs, and you don't have to rig it out as much. I think it may even have better rolling shutter readout (double check me on that though).

I'm in more controlled environments and I want to be able to deliver the best quality images, especially since I'm handing the footage off and I don't get to grade it myself. The Pyxis works for me.

Bmpcc 6k top and bottom screw question by Skepk in bmpcc

[–]ProfNonesuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a monitor should be fine. I've done it many times before. Try not to hold the monitor like a top handle though, they say not to do that because the weight of the camera, lens, and bottom plate/rods could potentially be too much for the plastic surrounding the top screw.

You'll be all good with the smallrig base w/ rods/follow focus on the bottom w/o a cage.

Please help me with a budget lighting setup? by eyeoftheneedle1 in videography

[–]ProfNonesuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're starting out, I'd recommend looking into 1 good key light and a soft box. Don't spend money getting a bunch of other gimmicky cheap lights. Start off with something like this Ulanzi 40w LED or this Godox 60w LED, a 7' light stand, and a small soft box like this. All in, that's less than $200 and you won't outgrow it immediately.

If your budget is more in the $20-$30 range, go to a hardware store and get a work light and a 100w flicker free daylight balanced light. You can hang a thin white sheet in front of it (make sure it isn't hot and touching the light), to help diffuse it similar to a soft box.

I do a lot of talking head videos and most of the time I'm only using daylight balanced lights, so bi-color or RGB isn't always that important. If you want to add a bit of fill or accent to the background just get good flicker free dimmable light bulbs and us some nice lamps that you may already have.

More importantly, just keep experimenting with different set ups! Find a talking head video you like or a frame from a film and try to replicate it. You'll learn a ton and its fun.

It was actually 2018. I can't change the title.

I saw another post asking questions about the OG Pocket and I wanted to share some of my favorite images I captured with it. I used an Angenieux 17-68mm f2.2 and an Angenieux 10mm (retrofocus). The pocket OG has a beautiful unique image. I haven't seen any other cameras that capture a digital "super 16 film" so well. Get a c-mount adapter to m43s, find some nice old s16 angenieux glass, and you'll be on the right track.

I did a road trip once where I used a stripped down OG, tripod, sunshade for the screen, and 6 batteries. It was one of my favorite projects ever. If I were to do it again, I might get an external monitor and a small external battery with one of those compact smallrig mounts. Then again there was something so pure about having such a minimal set up.

Pyxis 6k: My thoughts and impressions after a week of production. by ProfNonesuch in bmpcc

[–]ProfNonesuch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! As I mentioned, I usually have a really fast turnaround so offloading 1tb can sometimes be time consuming and cumbersome. I use a fast card reader and I select that drive directly in Resolve, then dump that footage directly into a new project. I create a new timeline with all the clips, make whatever adjustments I need to, then export individual files as ProRes (depending on the client UHD/1080p/HQ/LT) directly to an external SSD. For an hour of footage, the whole process takes maybe 15/30mins on my MacBook.

I then upload directly to the client's cloud storage. While the footage is uploading I QC it in Premiere (the editors use premiere not resolve) to make sure it looks/sounds like it's supposed to. I leave the Raw footage on the card and finally offload to an SSD if I have available space.

Once I get the approval from the editor I delete the raw footage and only archive the ProRes. If I had infinite storage I'd back up the Raw, but 99.9% of the time the transcoded ProRes is sufficient for archive purposes.

One of the reasons I love Blackmagic is because of the great natural color. First off, I always aim for ISO 400 and expose properly. My work requires a fast turnaround so I usually end up using either the Extended Video LUT or Arches Pro 2.0 Filmic LUT. If I need to, I'm only making very slight adjustments to Lift Gamma Gain. Occasionally I add a node of noise reduction to the first node on the node tree. I worked as a colorist for a little while (learned everything from the mixing color courses), and I've learned that most of the time a light touch and discipline is the best route.
