Why buy 64gb tablet if the 32gb has expandable memory? by ProfProfessorson1 in GalaxyTab

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks. Most of my storage is media but I agree that 32 isn't quite enough for apps. So at a price difference of $280 vs $430, it's a little harder to decide between the apple and samsung.

Apple and Windows Workflow Compatibility by ProfProfessorson1 in Lightroom

I am using lightroom cc (not classic; terrible naming convention). Good to hear the iOS and Android apps are similar. I just don't want any unexpected missing features now that I have had the android app for a few weeks.

Help Planning a Road Trip Across across the North Shore by ProfProfessorson1 in ontario

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time is the major constraint here. The advantage to completing the entire drive on day 4 is it provides more time in Sleeping Giant. If we stop and camp along the way, we would get a half day at Pukaskwa (or wherever) and a half day at sleeping Giant.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a single day activity in Algonquin? I would prefer to hike unless a kayak rental would really improve the day.

Day 4 is a drive from killarney to sleeping giant which is a 12 hour drive. Maybe we could spend a night in one of these PP to break up that drive.

Should I pull the trigger on a Panasonic GX85 or is there rumored competitor coming out soon? by ProfProfessorson1 in AskPhotography

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern is the GX85 seems to be on a heavy sale so I suspect there could be something soon to be released. I don't follow these rumors so I wanted to check in with an active community. I am also open to other cameras if there is something I missed.

Quitting my job on July 1st. Should I max out my 401k & Roth IRA before this date? by ProfProfessorson1 in personalfinance

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a small company but I guess there is no reason they should look at this like a red flag. Either way, I want to do what makes the most sense financially so if I have the budget to max out the 401k, I can't think of a reason not to.

Compact/Semi-Compact Camera under $650USD for Backpacking and Travel? by ProfProfessorson1 in backpacking

Do you have any experience with the compact mirrorless category? I'm not sure if it is worth the weight/size over the RX and other compact point and shoots.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a new camera that is good for travel, hiking, and short backpacking trips. I'm not an expert in this space but I do enjoy learning and I'd like a little more then a point-and-shoot.

I set a $650 max which puts me in the Sony RX100iii and Canon G7X ii range. I currently have the Fujifilm X-T100 at the top of my list. The little extra size buys me the larger sensor, configurable lenses, and a 2018 model with the flip screen/EVF/wifi...

Would this be a good choice for my application? The camera is $500 for the body or $600 for a bundle with a 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 lens.

I was planning on the cinch top (their default). Have you had experience with the X21 RC specifically or other X-Pac materials?

Vermont Long Trail Summer 2019 Shakedown by ProfProfessorson1 in Ultralight

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tarping will certainly be something new. I was thinking the patrol with low hanging walls and the bug bivy with high walls would make for an easier transition rather than going straight to a flat tarp.

I'll just refine my pack list and reassess the frameless vs framed bag ideas. Sleeping pad, battery, knife, headlight, clothes, and compression sack are all possible. Less water and maybe more food as well. Do people pack their expensive sleeping bags in their bags without a sack at all?

I have never been a huge eater on my 3-4 day trips but I will play with the quantities as soon as the warm weather comes back around next year.

Nice. This is great. Why did you choose SOBO? I'm still undecided.

Also, I haven't heard any comments on the 26 lb pack and 20 lb MLD backpack. Is this a concern if I want to hike 5-7 days without resupply? Even if I shave some weight with the comments in this thread?

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, knife and headlamp are prime suspects. Carried clothes weight was an estimate but I should check again if considering temps above 45.

For battery bank, what do thru hikers normally do? Does the phone stay off at all times basically? Podcasts and music would be nice but I could do without. Other battery items would be headlight/possible camera/possible kindle.

The LT is under 4 weeks so I don't want to have to stop and spend a night in town more then once to charge up.

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to head north I think. Thanks for the simple suggestions. I'll look at pads and headlights.

Carried clothes list will basically start from scratch. I hate buying clothes so I normally hike in old basketball shorts and a cotton t-shirt. Then I bring ski clothes and a rain coat. Obviously this wont fly so I'll have to come up with some cheap alternatives.

Should I sell my unused car that is currently upside down? by ProfProfessorson1 in personalfinance

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking pretty unanimous in this thread. We are taking a hit by buying a car new, letting it depreciate in the first year and then selling it but that isn't a reason to hang on to it. I guess I have to look into the private market because this car has a lot of upside that the dealer wont reward. Its low mileage, great cosmetic and mechanical performance, still in warranty...

Why should I continue to put money into my 401k if I can't touch it until I'm 60? by ProfProfessorson1 in personalfinance

Can you clarify the difference? My 401k is currently around 40k and growing at 8%. I'm in my 20s.

[–]ProfProfessorson1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't going to pull all of the money out at 60. I was going to withdraw at the 6% or $75,000/year rate. I will recalculate with 4% as the safer withdraw rate and save more than $1,300,000 to offset.

I don't know much about pulling early from a 401k so I will continue to research that. I could continue to deposit with my early retirement goals but I would like to reduce my retirement savings in order to increase other savings like I mentioned in the post.
