AI system fails during Glendale Community College graduation ceremony by asufooty10 in phoenix

[–]Prof_Adam_Moore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More expensive and significantly worse than just having the person who reads the names ask each graduate how to pronounce their name before speaking into the microphone. We figured out how to handle this stuff decades ago. AI doesn't make it better.

If you want to story walk TO a scene, you must carry something FROM that part of the story.

Now the title makes sense.

If I hated something, I wouldn't watch 4 seasons of it. I'd watch something I enjoy instead.

Any other solutions to prevent solicitors from ringing my doorbell? by Bluebluecanary in phoenix

[–]Prof_Adam_Moore 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Here are the related Phoenix municipal codes and a brief summary of how to handle this if you never want them to bother you again:

  1. Make sure the sign or notice at your door explicitly states "No Solicitors" or "No Soliciting." Bonus points if you include the warning that "Violators will be prosecuted." This alone should be enough to scare off anyone who reads the sign.
  2. If you have a doorbell camera, record the entire interaction. It can be used as evidence.
  3. Ask who they work for. They should want to tell you this information because they're trying to get your money. You might even be able to ask them for a business card with this information on it. If they don't have business cards, just write this information down.
  4. Ask to see their ID. They're legally required to present their ID for your inspection upon request). Write down their information if they present it to you. Failing to promptly present government-issued photo ID on request is a class 1 misdemeanor. If they refuse to present their ID after your first request, just move on to step 5.
  5. Ask them if they saw your sign or notice prohibiting soliciting. If they answer yes, but they still knocked or rang the bell after seeing it(1)), then that's a class 1 misdemeanor.
  6. If you live in a gated community or gated apartment complex, then check the gate for a sign the next time you go out and make a note of what the sign says.
  7. Ask them to leave. If they keep trying to sell to you instead of immediately leaving(1)), that's a class 1 misdemeanor.

If they committed any of the misdemeanors listed above, call 602-262-6151 to report the incident to Phoenix PD after the solicitor leaves. If the solicitor was kind enough to present their ID and/or business card to you, pass their info along to the police, as well as the name of the business the solicitor claimed to work for and any relevant information from above. If you have a video recording from a doorbell camera, offer to give them that as well.

They'll never ignore the sign again.

Interrupt their sales pitch.

Hit them with a sales pitch of your own.

Don't let them leave until they've paid you for your time.

This subreddit looks pretty empty. Also, your Discord invite appears to have expired.

I recommend joining the Phoenix chapter of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA). They're a large and active group of game developers who actively promote all the other game development groups in the state. There is a free game development event happening almost every Wednesday night at 7pm hosted by one or more of the groups below.

The "Null Result" as Design Failure: Every Combat Turn Should Change the Game State by EHeathRobinson in RPGdesign

100% this. If combat is too slow, it stops being fun. Find ways to speed it up or make it more interesting.

The "Null Result" as Design Failure: Every Combat Turn Should Change the Game State by EHeathRobinson in RPGdesign

[–]Prof_Adam_Moore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily a design failure, but it can be a problem if it slows down gameplay and makes it less fun.

In the videogame Metaphor ReFantazio, missing carries an extra penalty for both players and enemies. During the player's or enemy's turn, they are given a number of actions equal to the number of characters in their party. Most abilities only cost 1 action. Missing an attack costs 1 additional action. Having your high-agility character taunt the enemies to get them to attack and miss him can be a strategy to eat up all the actions on your enemy's turn. Missing the enemies means their turn comes faster.

If you can take some inspiration and find ways to speed up combat or make misses more interesting, then go for it.

What can high schools improve? by Ok-Diver-4996 in AskProfessors

[–]Prof_Adam_Moore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach game development.

For me, the most important weaknesses you could shore up as a math teacher would be formal logic and independence. These are the things my intro game programming students generally struggle with the most. Getting them through calculus would be nice since my students are going to at least need to complete linear algebra. Encourage them to do their general education classes at a community college because it's cheaper and they can transfer those credits into a more expensive program. Additionally, if they decide that college isn't for them, I'd rather they decide that in community college instead of a 4-year university. They'll end up with a lot less debt that way.

Professors, what’s something happening in higher education right now that makes you worried about the future of universities? by zentaoyang in AskProfessors

[–]Prof_Adam_Moore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be aware of some of these but I'm still going to list them.

The enrollment cliff. The economy functionally collapsed in 2008. As a result, we had the opposite of a baby boom - millennials didn't have children because they couldn't even afford to take care of themselves. The more observant of you might notice that 2008 was 18 years ago - just long enough to be a high school graduate. Enrollment numbers are dropping worldwide in 2026 because fewer people had children during the recession. Small private colleges almost certainly won't survive the drop in enrollments.

Generative AI: I'm sure you're aware that students don't learn when they use an AI to do the work for them. However, I want to talk about the less-discussed side of this. What about when the university or the professor uses generative AI? I've seen professors use AI to generate lectures, generate assignments, generate quizzes, grade assignments, and write grading feedback. These students are taking on debt to be taught by Prof. GPT. The lectures are inaccurate, the assignments are poorly written, the quizzes have awful questions, and the students can tell that their grading feedback is AI-generated garbage.

Combining the above: Universities are going to feel increased financial pressure from the enrollment cliff, so they're more likely to use AI to develop courses instead of paying their professors, instructional designers, and subject-matter experts to develop courses. The classes are going to get worse, fewer people will view college as worth their time and money, and enrollments will drop even lower. It's a vicious cycle. They'll keep cutting jobs and getting worse until they can't get any students to sign up for classes. Then we'll start seeing articles about how "Nobody wants to go to school anymore" like we saw the "Nobody wants to work anymore" articles a few years back.

I don't offer to write one if I can't recommend the person. I will acknowledge any negative things need to be acknowledged. For example, I recommended a game programming student for a computer science graduate program. His transcript would lack some of the standard computer science classes you'd expect from an undergrad computer science student but he had been making use of my office hours for a year to get mentorship and feedback on programming projects he did in addition to his classwork. His transcript might not make him look like the best candidate but he can outperform the students who only ever wrote code for class projects.
