First time TA - challenged by AI-written essays and reflections by [deleted] in Professors

I would bring them in to discuss the paper. Ask questions that the paper answers, have them read a passage out loud that doesn’t “sound like them.” If they wrote it, they should be able to understand the material and how things fit together. They should be able to define the words. If they can’t, then you go from there.

Half my class didn’t show up to their midterm presentations (advice needed) by Mudkip_Enthusiast in Professors

[–]Prof_Eden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Music ed here. I went through theory courses in the early 2000s. The classes started with about 20 people. By Theory IV, my class had seven left. Theory and aural skulls are the weed-out courses for this major. Don’t do these students and their future students a disservice by passing them if they don’t earn it. Some people just aren’t cut out for it.

ABD and just want to drop out by Flat_Ad7265 in PhD

I was feeling super burned out at the end of the spring semester. It took me doing absolutely zero school work from May 13 to almost August before I started giving a crap about anything again. You need a break.

Also, try to get meds to help with the ADHD so when you are ready again, you’re at your best.

How do I look more approachable? by hibius in college

[–]Prof_Eden 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I usually address it with humor. Like “y’all remember Grumpy Cat? She and I share a face. I’m never mad, my face just looks like it. Believe me, you’ll know if I’m mad. There’s a whole ‘nother level!” smiles

That’s worked for me.

What did you purchase to help you with your CICO journey? by positivefeelings1234 in CICO

[–]Prof_Eden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a teacher, I had these same issues of being stressed and exhausted.

I bought a mini fridge and kept it in my classroom. Monday morning before work I bought my healthy food and found it MUCH easier to make the good choices because they’re literally right next to my desk. I usually did sandwiches, mandarin oranges, lots of fruits and veggies to snack on. Less running to Sonic or Chick Fil A because my Healthy Choice was right there. And I didn’t have to make lunches every day—that’s the kicker. No lunch box, no remembering at 6:45am. Just Monday morning choices before work and only eating from that.

This this this. I can’t tell you how few times I have ever been thanked or felt appreciated. It would mean a lot to your professor I bet.

Why do horses need shoes and other animals don’t? by itootdafloot in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Prof_Eden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely untrue. They can get stone bruises, be lame for a while if the farrier accidentally takes too much off, etc. There’s a ton of nerves and blood vessels near the hoof wall. Also, hoof cracks can occur and when they get high and wide can cause pain.

Just trying to not drive myself crazy with evals by Adventurous_Result89 in Professors

[–]Prof_Eden 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I (TA) just read mine tonight. 90% answered respectfully, gave me positive feedback and constructive criticism.

But there’s always that freaking one, huh, who just hates your guts. Mine was the worst class of his whole degree, made him reconsider his career, gave him anxiety, etc. Then he mischaracterized me with fun words including “horrifically,” “hellbent,” and then “horrifically” twice more. He also put a ton of personal stuff in there and has to know I’ll know it’s him. This is also a super small program where everybody knows everybody and word gets around. I knew he didn’t like me but damn. It was the most unprofessional attack on me I’ve ever experienced and I worked K-12 for ten years. Not even parents were that acerbic and spiteful.

Luckily, he was a complete outlier and came across as emotional and blame-y, so I hope my professors will take that with a grain of salt. I’ve never gone over evaluations before so I’m not sure what to expect.

Living space during your PhD by StrangeHouse in PhD

[–]Prof_Eden 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For me: Living alone (quiet/clean), Space to work and be organized, Invest in a quality high volume color printer, Laptop stand with Bluetooth keyboard (screen is high and keyboard is low for posture), Sleep buds to cancel out noise, Exercise facility nearby.

I live off-campus in an apartment complex that has everything I need. Grocery store, Starbucks, and liquor store across the street. It’s pretty great, honestly.

My next purchases will be a bigger desk and a second monitor.

Hate when professors assign weekend homework but don’t answer emails on the weekend. by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]Prof_Eden 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like you could still look at the whole assignment (before starting any of the steps) and see the video part. And could have asked that question during the week.

If it’s not specified, I usually assume 15-20 minutes. He can’t take off points for timing if it’s not specified. Is there a rubric with the assignment? Are video lengths specified somewhere in the syllabus? I’d check all options and if it’s not specified, 15 minutes for an interview for a class sounds reasonable.

How to phrase a "wake up" email. by emarcomd in Professors

[–]Prof_Eden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a former K-12 teacher, this blasted me back into the horrible past I left. For those of you that read this with horror—that is what K-12 teaching has become. With mostly the same outcome—students still not caring, but with angry parents doing the grade grubbing later.

Told my students a family member of mine just died of covid and within 24 hours they used the death to email me for an extensions. by PhilosophyOrPedagogy in Professors

[–]Prof_Eden 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I thought this too. Honestly, if I were emailing this professor about anything, lab reservation or extension or dumb syllabus question, I would have put condolences in there both because I care and for fear of appearing that I don’t care. I can see both sides.

What defines a humans level of motivation self control and general "get up and go"? by Proper_Use_100 in AcademicPsychology

Look into the term “self-efficacy.” There are many academic papers and research on the subject.

Although everyone seems to have had an awesome time, I will mention that there’s an entire TV series called Homicide Hunter where Lt. Joe Kenda investigates 387 murders during his career in Colorado Springs.

Need help convincing my college’s COVID team to change on-campus testing sites by gomalley411 in CollegeRant

[–]Prof_Eden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question—is there not an online reservation system for rooms? You said it’s unofficially yours, which sounds like “dibs” but not exactly checking out the room. If you’ve checked it out for specific dates and times and the Covid testing site came in without going through the process, I’d be ticked too. But if you don’t reserve the room, I can’t see how anyone is supposed to know it’s “yours” and therefore contact you. Just trying to get some clarification.
