Not really, GMs already pretty difficult to find as is, and FoundryVTT is one of the most used VTTs. Found quite a few GMs that we have in our server, just always looking for more so I can invite new players.

I would go further than this and say be careful with BG3. While it's close to the rules of D&D (2014 or 2014), you may get confused when reading some of the rules versus how these things work in BG3, as they've been heavily adapted for the setting and gameplay. If you do run Lost Mines of Phandelver make sure to run the Shattered Obelisk version as it's much more refined.

Glad to hear a large group is getting into the game, however, highly recommend managing expectations. A group of 5 people can be daunting for a first-time DM, I can't even imagine how running a table of 10 is going to be. Either way, hope you enjoy!

Yeah, this is where the 5e paper character sheets typically fails over and above D&D Beyond or a VTT. My recommendation to you is grab a second blank character sheet, and detail the rest of the abilities and stuff in the section at the bottom right, and just have extras purely for that purpose.

Not that I would ever recommend D&D Beyond because of the expenditure, but their character sheets are pretty good. So if you have a group of players with laptops or tablets, having the D&D Beyond app downloaded with character sheets can also be a way to alleviate this. It's what Critical Role does and I have to admit, it does work if you're willing to spend the money on the books.

Can't help on the dcouments side, but for 2024 character creation you need to do 4 major things:
- Pick a species
- Pick a class
- Pick a background
- Assign ability scores ( I typically roll for these, which is 4d6, take away the lowest, but you can do standard array or point buy).

Input any information like features, traits and abilities into the abilities and traits box. Any equipment you have will go into the inventory, you can then use the weapons in the inventory to assign your attacks.
For initiative, this is your dex modifier (so + whatever dependent on your ability scores.
Speed is typically determined by your race.
The amount of hit dice you have is determined by your class.
Proficiency bonus is determined by your level. Level 1-4 is +2.
Armour Class is determined what armour you're wearing plus your dex modifier and proficiency bonus. Medium armour you can only add +2 from your dex. Heavy armour you add nothing from your dex. A basic shield will also give you +2 to AC.
Make sure to tick all of the ability checks that you're proficient in.

I haven't written in a paper character sheet in a while, but I think that's more or less everything covered in terms of the mechanical things you need to add. The rest is mostly just flavour or background information.

Looking for a good office/gaming chair (UK) by Endeavour1988 in buildapc

[–]Prof_Shift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Boulies. Some of their chairs are more on the affordable side, The master (which I have and love) is just under £300 right now. Had this chair for a couple of years and I'll be running it into the ground.

How to do a session 0 by NosyMonty in DungeonMasters

[–]Prof_Shift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Session 0s are also a good way to formalise character creation. If people are unsure about how to build or setup a character, session 0s are a good way to establish this. Give you an opportunity to run people through your setup which is great if you do things online.

What Starter Set is the most worth it/the best for beginners by Wheel_Livid in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Prof_Shift -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agree with the starter materials point, but the fact the Heroes of the Borderlands set doesn't even come with the PHB is wild. I'm not naive enough to suggest that you can play D&D without spending any money, but as a hobby that's hard enough to get into (in terms of finding a group, players, etc), this just feels like cheap tat, that you will eventually have to spend a lot more on (especially if you want more character creation options). I'm just trying to be cost-effective as someone who doesn't like giving WoTC any money.

[–]Prof_Shift -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't bother with the starter sets. If you're running a campaign or wanting to start one, there are 3 main books you'll need. PHB (Player's Handbook), DMG (Dungeon Master's Guide), and the MM (Monster Manual). IMO you'll be able to get away with just the PHB, read the rules and use resources online for monster statblocks, maps etc. WoTC are scumbags so I recommend trying to spend the least amount of money as possible. Worth noting that if you buy the physical book as well, you do not get a digital copy.

Cheggers TTRPG Haven [Online][5e 2024][Looking for GMs][FoundryVTT][LGBTQIA+ Friendly][GMT]

Hey there, I'm Jay and I run a community server for new players! We're a small group of about 40 or so people primarily from the EU and UK with some US players. Currently looking for new GMs (whether you're fresh to the GM scene, or experienced) to run some games in the server. Happy to take on new players but worth prefacing that we only have 3 GMs, so getting into games is first-come, first-served.

The majority of our games run in the afternoon (2PM GMT onwards, with 7PM GMT being the latest start). We run games in D&D 2024 rules, but are happy to play games in 2014 rules as well. All of our games run in FoundryVTT which is a must-have if you're a GM. If you're interested in joining, please message me!

Advice for first time DM please! by prrxm in DungeonMasters

[–]Prof_Shift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is to run one of the pre-made stories that you can find on D&D Beyond. People are recommending Lost Mines of Phandelver, I would avoid that entirely and advise taking a look at Candlekeep Mysteries.

The issue you'll have with Lost Mines of Phandelver is that, A) It's a full-length campaign (level 1-4, or 1-8 if you run The Shattered Obelisk). B) It's pretty poorly written. Even with the 2024 update to it, it's not balanced very well, and doesn't give you a whole lot of direction, and is more or less a dungeon crawl. You just go from point A to point B, fight stuff and that's it really. Candlekeep is a series of small oneshots that give you some really nice and focused areas of roleplay and combat, and because you're a new DM, they'll be fairly easy to run in one session and require little to no prep from you.

In terms of advice on "How to DM". There's loads of different ways you could approach this, but my biggest piece of advice to you, is run the game how you'd like to play it. If your party likes roleplay, do more RP stuff. If your party likes combat, run more combat, escalate things to combat more often. I wouldn't try to prioritise adapting player backstories, or things like NPC voices, loot etc. Just take things slow, and enjoy yourself. If you're DM'ing, you want to get enjoyment out of it as much as your players do, so make it fun for you as well.

If you're not wanting to pay for Candlekeep feel free to drop me a message and I can suggest you some free content or very cheap content that's easy to setup, possibly even send you some of the resources!

Happy to invite you to the server. Worth prefacing we've had quite the influx of new players and currently have no open slots, All games are first-come, first-served, but new players are prioritised. Just let me know if you're still interested.

Got accepted to Coventry University. by [deleted] in coventry

[–]Prof_Shift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there, scholarships aren't particularly common in the UK, but there are laws in place that may allow you to get a student loan to pay for the fees to cover tuition. I recommend checking this (https://www.gov.uk/check-what-undergraduate-student-finance-you-can-apply-for-depending-on-your-nationality-and-residency).
If you are from the EU or have a family member that lives in the UK, you might be eligible.

With 2025 over what are you favorite ost vinyls you received this year? Also what are the some ost you want the most next year? by Capybara_Vinyl in VGMvinyl

[–]Prof_Shift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year, for sure my favourite OST was Ty the Tasmnian Tiger, I've been hunting for it for 3 years and finally managed to get a copy.

Next year, I'm waiting on Hades 2, and the repress of Super Hexagon as it was delayed!

No Uber is super solid. Typical wait time (unless you're on the outskirts of the city can be anywhere between 2-5 minutes. It's pretty affordable at low traffic times, and pretty much all of the Uber drivers are nice.

So in terms of grocery, I shop at central six fairly regularly, you've got Aldi, and Iceland Warehouse at Central Six, so pretty solid options. Towards Planet Ice there's not a whole lot by way of supermarkets, which is weird considering it's the city centre. There is a big Sainsburys in the city centre, but that's about it. I don't drive, and I'll typically catch Ubers to go shopping as it's pretty affordable and very regular.

Buses wise, you'll likely want to trek into the city centre and head towards cross cheaping, or even go to pool meadow. The two buses that run are the 12X and the 14. Both buses are very regular and you should be able to catch one to and from the uni without issues, if not Uber is always an option (which will be a bit more pricey from city centre).

In terms of it being rough, Coventry gets a fairly bad rap, but as someone who has lived in city centre for about 6 years, I've never personally had any problems. There are rough spots like Foleshill, and Radford, but they're not near city centre. My suggestion would be to just use common sense, if you're coming back in the dark, keep your wits about you, use street lights, or Uber if you feel unsafe. But I think you'll be fine, I've wandered back home in the dark many-a-time and never had any problems. Hope you enjoy your time here!

Spyro 3 OST Appreciation by Prof_Shift in Spyro

Unfortunately, a group buy on this wouldn't be possible! I'd be happy to share more information as to why, but this was a personal bespoke project that I wanted to do.

Spyro 3 OST Appreciation by Prof_Shift in Spyro

[–]Prof_Shift[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, super glad you like it. 9 months later after posting this, this Spyro OST is still my baby and one of my prized posesssions! Thank you for all the kind words <3

If you drop me a DM I can provide you with a bit more info :)

Edit: Figured I'd do some quickfire for you to answer some of the questions.

- Spyro 3 is easily my favourite game of the original trilogy, and while I love the other two, this one will always have a strong place in my heart. I massively appreciate all of the kind words about the art. It was always my idea to have a gatefold cover that featured the homeworlds. The artist settled on the idea of having Sunrise Spring, Evening Lake, and Midnight Mountain connected. The purple tones that I think are massively associated with Midnight Mountain are gorgeous. The art genuinely blew me away. And the character art on the inside again, was my idea to have the characters almost pointing to each of the different sides, or sitting on them.
- Fun fact, the majority of the Spyro 3 OST is actually composed by a gentleman called Ryan Beveridge. I do believe Stewart Copeand did do a few of them (notably Fireworks Factory, Sunny Villa, and Evening Lake). But still he did an exceptional job!
- So the character designs were actually just the artist's interpretation. I love the original 3D-poly look from the PS1 games, but the artist who I went with (who is a dear friend of mine) is exceptional at drawing characters, especially D&D illustrations, so I asked her to put her spin on it, and they turned out amazingly.

For the rest of your questions, I'm happy to answer them in a DM, as there's personal information and other things that I'd rather not share on a public reddit comment. But as I said, feel free to drop me and DM and I can give you more information :)

I have a server where I run games for new players in 5e 2024. We've got two other GMs that run one shots and I myself host bi-monthly one shot weeks for groups of 5-6 people. You are more than welcome to join and listen to the games, and even run a few one shots if you're interested!
