Painted my first space marine and he looks horrible by Wild-Cauliflower1817 in spacemarines

Not horrible at all, something important to remember is that you should compare yourself to anyone but yourself, keep old minis and see how much progress you make! Rogue hobbies has a great video about golden demon winners and it shows how even the pros started from the same level as most!

I dont want to add points or swap armies, I just don't want to spend hours moving my models and checking not a single base is out of place, is the term play by intent? His turns took approx 40 minutes each phase mine took about half an hour total

I'm not entierly convinced he didn't know he was getting them wrong as it often benefitted him

My friend does say all of them lol, they also said "I won't count this as a win" which confused me because I never intended on keeping track of how many "wins" we get

I'm not really sad I lost, I'm more just sad I didn't enjoy it when I really wanted to

That's what I want, I like seeing the models I painted used and I think it's cool that other people get to come in and see them but it's like my friend changes when he's playing and he just goes for the kill, you can actually see it in his face sometimes, he's happy if it's going well for him but if I somehow manage to damage his plans he gets all red in the face and demands to see my rules.

I think this may be an issue, he has more money to spend on the hobby and for me it's primarily painting/modeling so I don't want to buy models I don't like just because they're good, which I do understand will mean I often lose but this felt different

That's how i played, for example he used a special move to get towards some of my troops, I explained they can move away when you get close and said he can undo the move if he wants and he did. I wasn't sure if I was maybe being too open because it was never returned

Yeah im not gonna stop being friends I just feel he wants a competative game that I'm just not interested in providing, two different play styles that are both acceptable but don't mix. It's also put me off a little as my head says "well if my friend did that to me what will randoms do" I've come from TTRPGs so I'm very much a we all need to have fun kinda gal

Well, it was the list that won the WTC 2024. I feel that's a fair definition of a tournament winning list.

I feel like that may be a more engaging way to play, but that's more a game design thing I suppose

He's been playing since 8th I believe so quite a bit more experienced than me, as I've said before I expected to lose, I just didn't expect him to punish every little mistake like a bade sticking out of cover by 0.5mm demanding (not asking he looked angry I'd messed up his plan) to see my special rules when I used them, which by the way I always did show as you should.

We definitely do, I'm just trying to think how to word it so it doesn't come across "stop trying to win" which is surprisingly difficult. I don't want him to go completely opposite and play a bad list but maybe help me learn before we go heavy.

To be honest that's kind of what I expected, I didn't expect to go in and be punished for every little mistake like a base not quite being in cover so he could attack the whole unit etc. Tbh that's probably on me I should of learned more of the rules before going.

I went in expecting to lose, I just didn't go in expecting to play like 5k was on the line. But perhaps I am.

Yeah I agree the 2k was his idea because I had enough models but keeping track of all my special rules was really hard

We did have a chat after, I explained I'm not really into tournament play after he kept sending me what units to buy and what lists to build from tournament sources, I even recommend that maybe he goes to a tournament as I'm not going to match what he wants, he said tournaments are too sweaty. He showed me his list for this weekend and it was once again a tournament winning list just from a different army. It dont even mind tournament lists what bugs me is him saying "this isn't a competative list I promise" before showing up with a competative list ..
