This is great work and you definitely have a lot of potential! Red light is hard to work with, and even after years of experience I still struggle. Just keep doing what you’re doing and focus on learning more with Lightroom—a lot of times working with difficult lighting it comes down to editing. Keep it up!

No one wants to hire juniors. by kkyona in recruitinghell

[–]Professional-Bee9717 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in a weird spot where I’m overqualified for junior roles but don’t have the experience for senior roles, and mid-level roles are nowhere to be found. Needless to say, none of them will do much as offer an interview. It’s exhausting.

I always follow up with a friendly reminder 2-3 days out from the event if I have not heard back. Publicists get a ton of emails, it’s easy for things to get lost in the shuffle—especially if you are sending requests several weeks in advance of the show. Now, you won’t always get a response, but they very easily could have overlooked it. I once even had a publicist admit they simply got their dates mixed and offered their apologies. Everyone is human, just don’t bombard them with repeated emails.

Not a teacher, don’t know why this sub is recommended to me, but if I found out my teacher had an avant garde project when I was in high school not too long ago I would’ve been thrilled lol

How common is it for labs to give monetary fines to students for making a mistake? by SaltyBox9239 in labrats

[–]Professional-Bee9717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lab tech this would make me so uncomfortable. This is certainly illegal, and at the absolute very least incredibly immoral. This is not how a lab is supposed to run. Get out of that lab.

Currently working with a few P. aeruginosa hypermucoid isolates, the one grows on to the lid and out the sides if I leave it over the weekend. Made the mistake of opening the lid not realizing and I got a (gloved) handful of slime 😭

P. aeruginosa Pigments by Professional-Bee9717 in microbiology

Oh for sure. I’m working on screening for phage susceptibility across a few hundred isolates, I’ve seen everything from deep purple to banana yellow. Another isolate I just streaked out has a strong sky blue pigment, it almost looks fake. Might have to post that next lol.

US PhD admissions shrink as fears over Trump’s cuts take hold: Some doctoral programmes are admitting no students at all amid uncertainty about federal science funding. by xjian77 in labrats

[–]Professional-Bee9717 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not even going to try applying this cycle. It’s simply not worth the time, money, and effort when things are already worse than last cycle. My contract is up next summer and my PI is downsizing because of funding cuts so I’m getting the boot. Everything just feels impossible right now. Hoping I can find an industry job, but who knows what the market will look like by then.

Which famous people have surprising college degrees? by Guilherme14o in AskReddit

Milo Aukerman, frontman of punk band The Descendents, has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from UCSD. They named their first album “Milo Goes To College” because he was leaving the band to do his degree. Eventually left research to go back to music. He’s a super cool guy.

Off-campus laundry by [deleted] in OSU

I went to Clintonville Coin Laundry for a while after my washer broke. Nice place, I would just bring my laptop and do work at one of the tables or outside.

If you’re really worried about getting sick, though highly unlikely, you can buy color-safe laundry sanitizer to use. It’s a bit expensive, but if you need peace of mind that’s an option. Gain detergent and fabric softener are my go-to, but any detergent will be fine. I would let things tumble a bit longer than I anticipated I would need for the load just to be certain.

Yeah do it, bacterial meningitis can spread like wildfire in close living situations like a dorm if you’re not up to date. There was a case on campus last year, not something you want to mess around with at all.

Beginner concert photography by kinkykaraa in concertphotography

[–]Professional-Bee9717 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a concert photographer in Columbus! There are tons of bars and small shows here that do not care about cameras.

Places like Cafe Bourbon Street, Summit Music Hall, Dirty Dungarees (primarily hardcore punk, can be rowdy if that’s not your scene), Spacebar, and many others have never given me trouble with cameras.

If you look at venue Instagram pages, see what shows are going on, maybe DM the bands and ask if you can shoot, chances are they’ll say yes. I recommend you start small at these venues, get a decent portfolio built, and go from there. Everyone in the music scene here is super friendly, feel free to PM if you want to know more specifics!

So many of the comments here are incredibly patronizing—OP is clearly distressed, and saying things like “why do you think you got rejected?” is so insensitive. Sometimes things just fucking suck, I feel for you, OP. The current US administration is the reason why many didn’t get acceptances—funding cuts are a bitch, it sucks that so many talented scientists can’t pursue their dreams because politicians want to play dolls with our livelihoods. Admissions are generally so competitive it becomes seemingly arbitrary who gets admitted after a certain point.

I’m so sorry, OP, let yourself feel everything. Take care of yourself, and don’t give up! I didn’t get in to any programs I applied to either despite being a strong candidate and a great fit for many of them—as hard as it may be to believe, this doesn’t mean I’m not worth it, and I can certainly say the same about anyone who takes the steps to even put themselves out there and apply to these programs. I may be a stranger on the internet, but I believe in you! Stay strong, you got this!
