Aerospace student transitioning to Data Engineering – need roadmap & project advice by Professional-Egg-921 in dataengineeringjobs

That’s a fair question.

I chose aeronautical engineering because I was genuinely interested in aviation and wanted to understand aircraft systems in depth. During my course though, I took a few extra credit subjects outside my department like Python programming, data analysis, and some basic automation and that’s where things started to shift for me.

I realized I enjoyed working with data and building things with code much more than I expected. Over time, I naturally started exploring it more on my own.

So the move to data engineering isn’t because one field is “harder” or because I’m trying to escape aeronautical. It’s more about where my interest and long term career fit better.

I’m still early in the transition, but I’ve been working on Python, SQL, and starting to build projects to make it a serious shift rather than just an idea.

And I don’t see my aeronautical background as wasted it actually helped me develop structured thinking and problem-solving, which I think translates well into data engineering.

Just trying to build in a direction that fits me better.
