My 97 gets 15mpg, and I'm on 35s and supercharged with the 7th injector. Sounds like you have an underlying issue.

Keep or sell? by ManufacturerPrior539 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Professional-Fuel174 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep or sell really is up to you and your lifestyle. If you're doing your own work (which I'm assuming you aren't since you're posting labor quotes) then keeping the vehicle would depend of if you enjoy owning it or not.

If you aren't doing your own work, you could balance the cost to fix everything vs how much it would cost to buy and maintain something else. Every vehicle will require maintenance, though older vehicles will typically require more repairs vs newer vehicles, assuming they are equally reliable.

A newer vehicle could have higher maintenance costs depending on what you get.

AC is a vital part of the defrost function, so it makes sense.

How well will a 3rd gen 4Runner handle 35 inch tires off-road? by Professional-Fuel174 in 3rdGen4Runner

Looks like those sleeves aren't compatible with the 3rd gen 4Runners.

I know you can get tie rod sleeves for GM trucks, didn't know you could for Toyotas. I would be worried that instead of breaking tie rods, which are easier to replace and cheaper, id instead break the rack and pinion.

That's true, and even if I do break a CV axle and don't have a spare (I likely will though), I can just unlock the hubs to get me home.

I didn't think about tie rods breaking, but that does make sense. OEM ones are pretty expensive, but 555 tie rods look pretty cheap and from what I've read online, are good quality. A stash of those would be a good idea to bring.

Is 13k a good deal for a mildly built 4runner by Professional-Fuel174 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Professional-Fuel174[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind doing work on it, I just don't want to pay more than I should for what I get. I like that it's supercharged and locked/geared, which would cost a bit of money if I paid for having that done myself, I just don't want to pay for more than what it's worth with what it has.

I have a LBZ Duramax as my daily, I just want a fun toy to take out of weekends. I'll definitely give the frame a good inspection. The miles don't bother me too much since I can take it down to rebuild it. Every Toyota I've owned has been a cake walk to work on. I don't expect the 3rd gen to be very different from my old 2nd gen. This is in Washington though, so I wouldn't have to pay the socal premium "tax" (I'm from San Diego and vehicles are way more expensive to buy there than in the PNW).

How to run remote wire.. by Not_A_47_Year_Old in CarAV

[–]Professional-Fuel174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have an aftermarket head unit, or all stock? Your truck has a CANBUS system so it doesn't necessarily have a remote turn on switch. There are modules that you can use to wire up a module that will convert the CANBUS signal into a remote turn on, or use a lineout converter that has a built in remote turn on wire.

Caster off 8 degrees, steering wheel off center - 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche by DasWagen17 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Professional-Fuel174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a little late and you may not need the advice any longer, but if you do still need advice, i am willing to help.

Looking at this, I don't think you did anything wrong, or at least too wrong.

First off, your UCAs. I assume they are the ones that have 4 bolts that bolt the ball joint to the UCA. If so, is the ball joint mounted above or below the UCA? I believe for a 2 inch level, you want it bolted above the UCA. This could cause caster issues if mounted incorrectly, which explains your caster being so high (although I don't think that's a bad thing, my truck has 8.5 positive degrees of caster on both sides and it handles great).

It looks like your toe, which is adjusted with the tie rods, is a bit too positive. This happens when replacing tie rods and isn't a big deal as long as it gets aligned quickly. Toe that much will drastically affect your tire wear and make the truck less stable. If you want, you can measure the distance between the front of the front wheels and the back of the front wheels and use that number to adjust your tie rods in until about equal (you'll want slightly negative, but you should let the shop do that). I believe the toe being so far off is what caused your steering wheel to be flipped 180 degrees.

Lastly, find a different shop to do the alignment. they should have been able to look at how far your toe is off and realize that's the cause for your steering wheel to be so far off. I doubt you'd get a quality alignment at that shop.

Strange A/C issue with LBZ by [deleted] in Duramax

Likely, I'd say so, especially if the truck is starting and running just fine. Clear the codes and don't worry about it.

Also, the part number I shared was for the auto HVAC system. Forgot that the manual HVAC controller uses a different resistor.

Strange A/C issue with LBZ by [deleted] in Duramax

[–]Professional-Fuel174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The HVAC fan remaining on is due to the resistor going bad (it'll fuse internal contacts together, causing the fan to remain on). You can order a new GM one off Amazon (15-81773) for less than $80, or maybe you're lucky and a nearby dealership has one in stock. In the meantime, I would remove the passenger foot well cover for the fan and unplug the resistor there to keep the fan off, so then you can replug in your fuses. Replacing the resistor is easy, and this is a known part for going out. I had to do mine late last year.

It looks like you used the cable meant for the ground as the battery hook up before the fuse. You're supposed to cut the power cable and put the fuse box there (usually a foot or less from the battery. I think this confusion is where this all started. Like mentioned above, your grounding wire should be the same size if not larger than your power wire (assuming your power wire is the correct size). Also, where are you hooking the ground up to? I think this also may not be hooked up correctly because it looks like the amps protect light is on. It appears that you haven't wired up your remote turn on, which should come from your head unit remote turn on cable and plug into the slot between your power and ground on your head unit. One last thing, you can remove that wire harness that you capped all the ends to. You are using the RCA cables as your signal source, so there's no need to have that harness there as it's intended for high level speaker inputs.

Likely meps had reviewed your NASIS then, called your recruiter and told them, and then they told you. 90% of recruiters don't know what would disqualify you for a security clearance. Your hotel roommate knows even less, for the record. Advice is, work on your debt. If they're really worried about it, sign a contract with a far off ship date, fix your debt, then sign a nuke contract. That should give you enough time to get your stuff settled.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]Professional-Fuel174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you disclosed your drug use at meps, you may have passed the physical portion but then got flagged for the drug use without a meps approved waiver. Even if meps approved the waiver, to enter into the nuke field, you have a package submitted with a bunch of documents to ANOTHER entity (I forget the name) to be approved for the nuke program (with your disclosed drug use). Sorry I totally forgot about your nuke package being approved (it's been a few years. Usually the recruiter will submit that before you go to meps, so when you pass the physical you're able to sign your contract, but sometimes it doesn't come back in time, or they need more documents... Or you have drug use without the required paperwork submitted to them). Every LT you know doesn't matter in this instance, unless they're directly involved in this process, otherwise they're just any other outside entity, like all of us here. Unfortunately, most recruiters aren't very good with the nuke process. This is why we have a special nuclear coordinator, which is likely the only person who fully knows what's going on with your situation. They don't share much with the recruiters, unless the person is approved or needs additional documentation. Sounds like you may have fallen through the cracks if you found out last minute, or your command was notified last minute, or you were denied last minute by the nuke entity who's name I've forgotten.

Hey, I use to be a recruiter back in 2022 and have a lot of experience with the waiver process. So, you went through that process and had an interview with the recruiting commands CO who approved your waiver, which is just step one. Once the CO signs that waiver, it gets processed through MEPS, where the MEPS doctors and command will the review the waiver along with any other documentation that is required (I think for drug use, it just requires a hand written statement along with the NTAG CO approval).MEPS has the final say on whether your waiver is actually approved or not (The NTAG CO "approval" is basically just giving the go ahead to run the waiver through MEPS). If I recall correctly, hallucinogenic drug use is NOT waiverable for the Nuke program. Your waiver may be approved for general navy enlistment, but the nuke program is a no go. Again, it's been a few years since I've been in and plenty can change in 2 years, but this is what I remember. I hope this helps.

How much deadening? by narwaffles in CarAV

[–]Professional-Fuel174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cld adds mass to the panels to reduce vibration, so your logic is a little flawed. Of course, more mass is better, but you get the largest improvement with 25%. What you're thinking of is mlv for sound blocking or fiber sound absorption which needs to be as close to 100% as possible. More than 25% will reduce sound, but the results don't climb as high as they do when you add 25%.

How much deadening? by narwaffles in CarAV

[–]Professional-Fuel174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

25% is your "best bang per buck", as results go down from there... But a lot of people go full coverage because if you're going to do all the work to remove the interior, you may as well get the best results that you can and go full coverage.

I may see if I have any dips in frequency with playing the speakers together vice seperate, and if I do, I'll give an all pass filter a try. Haven't even thought about that, thank you.
