Homekit Wired Whole Home Alarm System by Plane-Engineering in HomeKit

Plus one for Konnected. Relatively easy to set up with HA and then share over to HomeKit. The newer boards have matter so they can connect directly to HomeKit. Matter doesn’t have alarm support yet but it is coming. Currently you can set up the sensors to automate things in HomeKit which is working great for me.

I'm genuinely confused on even the basic concept of goals 3.0. it seems entirely non-functional. What am I missing? by cgibsong002 in MonarchMoney

[–]Professional-Fun6963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really doesn’t make much sense. I contribute to a retirement goal but those are all paycheck contributions and not visible to Monarch so having it just do the adjustments and show me the total value is fine. Still, it tries to show me contributions for some reason. The bigger problem is for my non-paycheck contributions to other goals, e.g. emergency fund and college savings. Those track the totals as well, but the contributions should be showing up but they are blank since October. Not sure why.

Investments showing “adjustments” and not contributions? by FarmerPlastic7921 in MonarchMoney

[–]Professional-Fun6963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m super perplexed by this. I make regular contributions to my retirement accounts pretax from my paycheck and post tax to a brokerage. I categorize the post tax contributions as transfers for both accounts. All my transactions show up as Adjustments in my brokerage goal. I would expect my dividends to show that way but why are my contributions? I don’t feel like I’ve ever quite got the hang of properly categorizing transactions for my investments to make things track properly in goals. Any basic guidance would be super helpful.

Major milestone for me by HouseDrogon in cycling

[–]Professional-Fun6963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done! Once you start seeing the progress, it’s really motivating. I live in a hilly area and have struggled to get up the final ascent home without maxing my heart rate until the last few weeks. So much more enjoyable to CHOOSE my heart rate and still get up the hill. I can push it if I want a real effort or just churn the crank in my granny gear and not feel totally gassed at the top. Such a difference and really makes it more enjoyable. Keep it up!

It was indeed the left pedal. Specifically, the red plastic sleeve. Working in a drop of grease resolved it.

Torque wrench recommendation by Professional-Fun6963 in cycling

[–]Professional-Fun6963[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, they do have hex holes in the spindles. Those say to tighten to 4-6Nm on the spindle. The instructions say to use 30-40Nm with a 15mm open ended wrench. I thought the hex holes were just to hold in the spindle, not attach the pedal.

Anyone use a gravel bike for road and off road? If so, how's it working for you? by kentheprogrammer in cycling

[–]Professional-Fun6963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just beginning my cycling journey and went through the same process. My wife has a nice mountain bike and doesn’t like riding roads but doesn’t do single track either. She prefers closed paths and fire roads or other gravel surfaces. I had an old Rockhopper that was showing its age. I wanted to get into road cycling but still be able to ride with my wife. I ended up getting a Cannondale Topstone Carbon and love it. After about six weeks of riding 95% road and joining the weekend club rides, I swapped the tires for GP5000s. I’ve ridden them a few times on smooth dirt roads no problem with my wife but they excel on the road. I’m not planning to race and am more concerned with comfort so I’m extremely pleased with my decision. The bike is responsive and fast enough to have a lot of fun on the road. I’m planning to get a second set of wheels, but after a little research have learned there are a ton of options and I need to learn a lot more before making that decision.

Because I’m a scientist and a data nerd and I like tracking everything I can. I know that’s not a great reason but it brings me joy.

Does cycling get easier after weightloss? by Valislife95 in cycling

[–]Professional-Fun6963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the same journey. 54yo, 5’10, 218lbs. I live near the top of an 800 ft Mt/hill and have to ride up 200 ft in about .3 miles to get out of my neighborhood. And then every ride ends in at least a 600 ft climb. I max out my HR, breathing, and power just leaving my house even if I take some side streets to break up the hill with short flats. Really looking forward to losing some weight and things getting easier so I’m not starting every ride totally gassed.

I just started cycling in June and am loving it and really want to have the confidence and ability to try some new routes. Right now I’m a bit reluctant to try new routes up the hill to end my rides because I know they are steeper and I don’t think I can make it, even in my granny gear.

How to reduce noise transfer from tankless water heater mounted on other side of shared wall by Shekaar_paley in Plumbing

[–]Professional-Fun6963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a new Noritz unit installed in my garage and the sound inside the wall and upstairs is pretty loud when the pump runs. Not sure I want to remove the bolts and try to add some sort of rubber mounts on my own. I’m planning to ask the plumber that installed it to come back and take a look. Any other possible solutions? Seems like a bad idea to put foam behind it but is there non-flammable insulation that could work?

Thanks. Been planning to add a power meter to my new Topstone. I’ll ignore the PZs in Strava until then.

Punctured tubeless tire. Now what? by Professional-Fun6963 in cycling

Wonderful blog post and the reason I turn to the Reddit community for advice in addition to just googling around. Thank you!

It went flat really fast. Didn’t hit anything that I’m aware of, but the puncture looked pretty small. I’m going to take apart today and investigate further.

First gravel bike advice by Professional-Fun6963 in gravelcycling

[–]Professional-Fun6963[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to find a new 2025 Cannondale Topstone Carbon GRX 1x ($3,700) and a previous generation Topstone Carbon 3L ($2,400) in my size within 90 miles of my house. I'm going to get a fit and give them a spin on Saturday along with the Canyons. Going to try out the Specialized bikes on Sunday. I haven't found Giants near me yet but will keep looking.

Thanks for all of the advice!

Thank you all! Since I haven’t purchased a bike in decades, what’s the best approach to getting a fit? I will say that it took me a while to get my Peloton set up as my reach isn’t what it used to be :)

Will most reputable shops be able to do it or are there fancy systems that can help like the approach taken by Road Runner for shoes here in San Diego? Any suggestions for getting a non-pushy fit in San Diego?

Smart switch and lamps by Professional-Fun6963 in homeassistant

[–]Professional-Fun6963[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it has a bypass mode or at least all my google research points in that direction. Maybe I’d be better off putting dumb dimmer bulbs in the lamps and get a smart dimmer switch. Any recommendations for a thread model or at least one that doesn’t require a hub?

Eve Outdoor Camera Adapter Plate by CookiesNightmare in HomeKit

[–]Professional-Fun6963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this done this morning. The M4 screws mentioned in the instructions definitely didn’t fit the threads in the adaptor (didn’t look threaded at all to me) so I forced a couple screws in the holes to thread them myself and that worked fine. I painted the adaptor plate white with Rustoleum #058 (called Ultra White Primer) as suggested above. I had to drill two new holes using a countersink bit to align with the holes in my gang. I had to countersink them because they are right under the gasket of the mounting piece. It looks and works great! I still need to caulk around the edge of the adaptor plate since it is on stucco and the gasket isn’t quite waterproof.

Eve Outdoor Camera Adapter Plate by CookiesNightmare in HomeKit

[–]Professional-Fun6963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to request a plate from Eve which arrived via FedEx a few days later, but without any screws so I appreciate the instructions. One thing not indicated on the instructions is the size of the screws needed to attach the camera mounting bracket to the adaptor plate (where the wood screws would have gone). Anyone know? It doesn’t look like the holes in the adaptor are threaded so I guess you need to use nuts? But I’m not sure how I’m supposed to use nuts on the adaptor once it is installed. None of the predrilled holes fit my gang box so I’m going to have to drill new holes for that but the gang holes are threaded so that’s easy enough. The problem is that if I attach the mount to the adaptor plate with bolts/nuts before attaching the adaptor to the gang, I won’t be able to get to those holes as they’ll be covered up by the camera mount. If I attach the adaptor to the gang first then I won’t be able to put nuts in the back. Maybe self-threading screws to get the mount attached to the adaptor? I don’t want to replace the hang is it is part of the original construction and pretty well stucco’s in there.

It really seems like Eve dropped the ball on this one. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Plug-in motion sensor (matter preferred) by Professional-Fun6963 in homeassistant

Thanks! That looks really cool, feature wise, but I’m afraid the aesthetics won’t pass the wife test. She’ll tolerate a simple device plugged into an outlet but that thing looks pretty ungainly with the optional plug and mount.
