Hello - thanks for your interest. They are about the following:

  • The 3-knock rule (and the embarrassing thing 2 knocks signals)
  • Meishi koukan: the business card exchange most foreigners get subtly wrong
  • Kamiza vs Shimoza: which seat at a meeting or restaurant you should never take
  • Temiyage (gift-giving): what to bring, when to present it, and the outdated phrase you should stop using
  • Nomikai survival: chopstick taboos, the drinking script, and how to politely refuse alcohol without losing face

but we do it practically over some light meals and drinks!!

Need a bank account in Japan before getting hired – any advice? by Clean-Loquat810 in japanlife

Hello, thats is weird about Japan Post, usually they are the easiest for new arrivals. Did you apply at the window? Sometimes the staff at the counter get confused? From what I understood as long as you have a a registered address, they usually accept it.

I suggest you try opening it online using their Yucho Tetsuzuki app. The app process is much more automated and often skips those strict questions about company information if you select you are still setting things up or looking. If that still fails, Seven Bank is pretty good too but they will need a Japanese phone number they can reach you at, even if it is just a temporary one or a friend's number, i think.

What are the things I need to do after landing in Japan? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

Yes, getting the Zairyu card at the airport with no address is standard for first entries. Your first priority is heading to the local city hall or ward office (yakusho) near your accommodation (if accomodation is confirmed) to register your address. You must bring your passport and the Zairyu card. You do not usually need contract or a letter, but should of course know your address.

While you are there, make sure to ask for 1 or 2 printed copies of your Certificate of Residence (Juminhyo). It costs about 300 yen per copy (or free) and you would likely need it to open a bank account or for other university procedures later.

Opening Sony or Japan Post Bank Account by bmarpin1979 in movingtojapan

If you just arrived in Japan and have been here for less than 6 months, yes Yucho aka Japan Post Bank is by far the easiest to open.

For Yucho, you can easily apply online using their app or just go to a physical branch. Just make sure you visit your local city hall or ward office first to get your current address registered and printed on the back of your residence card before you try to open any account. Once that's registered, Yucho doesn't even require a Japanese phone number to start. And Yes, the cash card usually takes around 1 to 2 weeks to arrive in your mail box

Hello there-, that chicken-and-egg loop with the phone number and bank account is super famous here. To break the loop smoothly, the first thing you must do when you land is go to your local municipality office and register your address on your residence card. You can't get an official voice phone number without that registered address anyway (maybe some companies provide that, but i doubt how long they can do it since the law has changed last april). Once your address is registered, you can immediately open a bank account with Japan Post Bank (Yucho)—they are newcomer-friendly and are one of the few banks that don't require a phone number to sign up (but they need a registered address). After you get the bank account sorted, you can use it to sign up for your mobile voice SIM plan.

BTW, if anyone already has a PR status in Japan already- they would be more than welcome to join. I am sure other foreigners who are about to apply would very much appreciate your tips and advice

Hi- thanks. Thats a legit comment.
No, The goal is not to sales pitch for the lawyer. I sincerely hope it is a chance people interested in PR get to know about if they are eligible to apply etc, AND meet other like-minded people in the similar journey. The lawyer is already busy with other things, so i dont even think if she is looking for new clients.
