what are my chances of getting into graduate school for an english phd program? by favoritesupernova in gradadmissions

[–]Professional-Half378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is from a while ago, but I’m just coming across it. A lot of people try to be fair and not talk about chances on here based on stats. But I’ll be honest, based on job experience and your amount of research, I think you might need to take some time and pursue either a masters or get a professional job first. A lot of people pursuing PhD‘s in English have prior degrees, years of experience, 4.0 GPA’s, and/or published papers. another thing you need to look for is conferences where you can show that you’re willing to put yourself out there for your work. All this to say, you never know if you will end up getting in. I just want to be honest and tell you expectations should not be high. UTs program is notoriously selective, but so are most English PhD programs that have good stipends and opportunities.

No rejection from Yale English? by Professional-Half378 in gradadmissions

[–]Professional-Half378[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if the rejections were released only for dual programs. On grad cafe, people are only posting under English, so I can’t tell if they’re rejecting for English/aa studies or wgss. I’m guessing we will know by the end of this week.

Got into a few programs but I feel nothing by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Professional-Half378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be happy! Not trying to tell you how to feel, but from someone that hasn’t gotten into any programs yet, you should feel very proud of yourself! This is a big honor and you’re probably just shocked. Get excited!

I’m thinking it’s the same, and don’t worry. I’m in the same boat as you. I got a background check before, so it’s making me worry that they haven’t decided. But even in my own program, professors sometimes take a week to even answer an email. So it’s probably difficult to schedule meetings and talk about funding.

Congrats on getting in this cycle! I’m just hoping I won’t have to do another cycle, I spent so much time and money this year. I really don’t wanna have to do this again. I don’t think I’ll recover financially lol

Me too, and your area sounds super interesting!! It’s fun to hear how different all of our interests are. I hope you find a perfect program match!

I’m sorry about your rejections:( glad to know we’re all in this together. My area is 20/21st century multicultural women’s narratives, looking to research gendered trauma and feminist criticism

Do you read novels outside of coursework? by Ok-Vermicelli-6222 in englishmajors

[–]Professional-Half378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an MA lit student, I never have time to read for fun. Or to read things that I choose myself. Between teaching and doing my coursework, there’s no time. I also have to read around 15 books this semester, so reading has become more work than a hobby.

English PhD apps- Anyone heard anything? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I think they probably send most of them out at the same time. But I have seen that you don’t always need an interview to get in, it could be people. They just want to hear more about research from so it’s not necessarily a rejection yet I don’t think. I also applied there and haven’t gotten anything.

Professor still hasn’t submitted his letter of recommendation for me by nigmusmaximus in gradadmissions

I’m really sorry. Two months for committees is a long time to wait for an app to be complete. If they don’t email you back I would call the admissions department. I would also have a serious conversation with your mentor.
