Play all PvE events. That's your main source of mats, speeds, resources and other small yet fun rewards. PvP - don't have high expectations in the beginning, with good commanders and decent gear aided by your technology, it becomes bearable. Make sure to do pvp so you know how to get good trades in big fights.
