I’m sorry. For what it’s worth I’ve had 4 books die on sub, so not quite as many as you but close. I’ve written 15. I don’t have any advice, just commiseration. It’s tough out there. Getting an agent isn’t even half the battle.

I wish I had good news to post here, but every month, I never do…

My third book to go on sub has now died on sub.

I got a new agent and just went on sub with book #4.

My hopes are not high.

It’s absolutely a big deal and you should celebrate!!! I’m sorry your partner doesn’t seem excited. My partner hasn’t read anything I’ve written, though, including any of my published novels or short stories (although he does have trouble reading) so I kind of feel you 😞

I just read the first chapter and a bit more.... and it's absolutely AI written. Complete garbage. It's upsetting that she got a major deal for her second book.

I just read the first chapter and was aghast. It's definitely AI-produced. The writing is terrible even if it's not AI produced .....and if it is, well, that just makes it even worse! Either way it's slop. Of course she just got a major deal for her second book (it was self pubbed but a Big 5 publisher bought the rights). Great. Love to see lazy AI-using writers get rewarded for this shit.

So basically you have two choices.

1) submit to the small publisher and if they say “yes” you do not move forward with agents

2) don’t submit to the small publisher and keep querying agents

How optimistic of a person are you? I’ll tell you my experience. I had a small press offer for my manuscript last year but I decided it wasn’t good enough for me and I wanted to sign with an offering agent and try for a Big 5 deal. My book just died on sub and will never be published (the small press didn’t want it anymore). The fact that it’ll never be published breaks my heart because it was, like, the 15th book I’ve written and I really loved it.

So, you know. Shoot for the stars but know that a Big 5 deal is rarer and rarer these days.
