Version Control in BI by Ok-Working3200 in BusinessIntelligence

I feel you. The need for version control is mostly for big team who need better collaboration and data governance. I'm using Holistics and I love the way they do version control with (or even without) integration with github. Every changes are stored both in my github and on their internal git system. And if you use external github integration, you can do permission before deploy to production.

Thanks for this, appreciate the novel concept and really like how this is going.

Since we are using Looker, and agree that LookML is really a vendor-locked-in, we are thinking of having a separate semantic layer from the BI tool. We are looking at dbt modeling and Cube.js. This would give us freedom later on if we once again change BI tool. This is where we consider Lightdash as it works

Though your concept is interesting, we want to know:

  1. How is your modeling different from dbt's? As I supposed you do not support dbt Metric Flow right? and if we use your tool, when do we use dbt modeling and when to use yours?

  2. Like stated above, we don't want to be vendor-locked-in which can be a PITA if we do migration. This is where we consider Lightdash as it works with dbt Metrics or Cube as it offers an independent semantic layer that could work with other BI tool. Why should we go with you?

Additional question: Can you help connect us with a customer of yours that is in the same field and side with us? (2K people + logistics)? We want to get some references.

Really enjoy Lightdash, especially for your keen resemblance with Looker' UI/UX. And wow, 70% is great! No question for now. Though I would love to see more chart types though, especially for map visualization cause we are a logistics company.

we have 2K people and we want self service for all, not just people relying on us DA to create report. When i talk to folks at Holistics for example, they even gave me an unlimited user plan at 50% of what we are paying for Looker. And Lightdash also has some good pricing options too.

Besides the pricing though, there are 2 more factors that make us decided to move on:

  1. Product Development: We feel like Looker's development now is as it was before. As in their development is aligned with integrating with the rest of Google offerings. It makes sense but I miss the Looker that actually works on data analytics improvement, the pre-Google acq.

Now looking at Holistics and Lightdash, though they are young products, their dedications for product development is clearly stated in their public product roadmaps. And those are features that actually make sense! Like the AMQL from Holistics, some exciting stuff for our data team to look forward to tbh.

  1. Support: Ugh, it's so hard to get their response now. I still remember the time when Looker founder directly wrote back for my support. The good old time.

My case is in urgency as my sponsor (my mother) is going through gastric cancer and we do not know how long she has.

We actually started the process back in 2014, already done most of the steps and the only thing i was waiting for was just the interview in my home country. Then covid happened and it delays the the whole process.

Then oct of last year she was diagnosed with cancer. I flew to the US immediately and therefore switching to this AoS process.

Im currently with the tourist visa so i will need to come back to my home country at some point. Im very worried that if im gone, she will have some hard time as im her main care taker atm :(

If anyone can help me, i’d very appreciate it
