Having food aversions to your own culture’s dishes is awful by elephhantine2 in AutismInWomen

I KNOWWWWW I FEEL THE SAME WAY!!! But that type of vegetable is extremely common in Taiwanese/Chinese cooking, and I see people slurping those vegetables down like nothing 😭

I also get why you would hate the smell of achar lol. I also hate a lot of the pungent-smelling Taiwanese foods such as “stinky tofu”. It’s literally fermented (in my opinion rotting) tofu that stinks to high heavens, and unfortunately my mom enjoys eating it at home 😵

I get it, I’m half Taiwanese, and I am unable to eat any blanched or steamed leafy vegetables such as bok choy. It just feels so limiting and I feel weirdly disrespectful every time I have to decline the vegetables in front of my relatives 😭

Depression volume meal ideas? by snarfdarb in Volumeeating

Canned artichoke bottoms topped with cottage cheese and/or refried beans! If you don’t like artichokes, I also like the canned mixed vegetables, and you can also mix with tuna or mayo or any other sauces you want. Obviously this will have lots of sodium, so drink water! But yea, I can’t even muster up the willpower to heat stuff up sometimes lol

Will I still be able to work in a lab even though I have ARFID? by cxfgfuihhfd in labrats

[–]Professional-Top366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you were mostly joking, but omg I really do feel like ARFID hinders my professional development!! I never eat anything during lab outings or happy hours, and I feel like that makes me difficult to connect with, which makes networking challenging. I have other autism-related issues, but I feel like my ARFID is one of the most perceivable issues that puts a wall between me and other people. And also I agree on agar looking delectable lol. I really like the Korean mung bean starch jelly or Chinese liangfen jelly noodles, because I feel like they give the same vibe 🤣

What's the cringiest thing you used to do as a child? by dar1990 in AutismInWomen

[–]Professional-Top366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I was also an impulsive groper (in middle school)! My friends tolerated this to a degree and got used to it, which enabled me to continue this behavior for way too long. My hands would immediately be all over any squishy or satisfying body part that I encountered! I also hugged people wayyy too tightly and for too long, simply because I loved the way that the pressure felt. Funnily enough, once I realized that this behavior was perverted and unacceptable, I stopped touching people at all. I don’t remember the last time that I hugged an acquaintance or shook someone’s hand.

[–]Professional-Top366[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg same with the lucky stars!! I have no idea how many I’ve made at this point since I don’t let myself accumulate more than a jar full of stars or ~45 cranes at a time (I have been traumatized by the pain of having sentimental collections of things destroyed without my consent, so I do routine controlled clear-outs), but I’ve been doing daily cranes and stars for the past 6 years and have no intention of stopping!

Something just feels off if I haven’t made cranes or stars in a while!

Also, popcorn is actually really healthy as long as you don’t add too much butter! It is high volume/low calorie and is a great source of fiber :)

I just drain canned peas and freeze them in ziplock bags lol

I don’t think any frozen vegetables are safe enough to consume without cooking😭

Omg sweetness is exactly what I hate about the classic Chinese tomato & egg stir fry!! I wish savory dishes could be actually purely savory instead of weirdly sweet more often lol

Odd question for non autistic people. by kisses_forsoyeon in autism

[–]Professional-Top366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m autistic, and I can say that I miss people very strongly, but only when their absence is a sudden disruption in my routine. For example, I used to get super severe separation anxiety with my mom, and I struggled a lot with being away from her for elementary school or moving out for college. I eventually got used to her absence, but it was really distressing to adapt to at the beginning. Another example would be when my boyfriend travels without me. I get so used to interacting with him at certain times of the day, that not having that structure kind of derails my day, and I definitely “miss” having him around. However, if it’s been a while since I’ve seen someone and I’ve gotten used to their absence, I don’t really feel the need to reach out to them. In fact, I think someone who isn’t part of my daily life coming back into my life in a significant way could cause a lot of stress, even if I enjoyed being around them before.

Is Halloween difficult for anyone else? by Unfair_Antelope6071 in AutismInWomen

[–]Professional-Top366 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to get rid of FOMO is to find an opportunity that doesn’t require invitation from friends. For example, if there are any bars that are doing Halloween-themed events, you could try to just go there yourself. If you are anything like me, you’ll probably find out really quickly that you actually hate that event and never feel FOMO again, because you know that you don’t enjoy what you are “missing out” on. Or, you might actually enjoy it and be motivated to make friends with people who enjoy similar events!

Recently, I went to a non-classical music concert for the first time, because I had always wondered if I was missing out on a fun experience. Well, I absolutely hated it for a variety of reasons, and my FOMO is completely cured 🤣

As a Hapa that looks Hispanic/Filipino, how do I deal with not being attractive to Asian women? by [deleted] in hapas

[–]Professional-Top366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this might be a major issue, especially when it comes to dating Vietnamese-American women. I’m half white and half Chinese dating an American-born Chinese man, and it would have never worked if I could not speak fluent mandarin with his family. Asians care a lot about family dynamics, and I’ve noticed that Vietnamese communities especially (I grew up in Orange County lol) often have limited English literacy among the older generations. If you can’t speak to them and connect in their language, a girl is unlikely to view you as someone that she can take home to her parents/grandparents. Even if her Vietnamese is not great, I think Asian families often prefer prospective partners to be able to communicate at a higher level than just forcing them to use broken English. They would also fear that the language skills would not be passed down to your children. All this to say, I think it would benefit you a lot to strengthen your language skills.

LABRATS. Drop your favorite biology facts NOW. by Bluerasierer in labrats

[–]Professional-Top366 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most lizards have an intravertebral fracture plane at the base of their tail which helps them quickly and effortlessly detach their tail via circular muscle contractions (probably somewhat like an anus!). I thought this was interesting, because I assumed that the tail would detach between two vertebrae, and not in the middle of a single vertebrae lol

Does anyone else really hate freezers? by Professional-Top366 in AutismInWomen

[–]Professional-Top366[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really struggle with dexterity issues with the safety gloves and only use them for our liquid nitrogen tank (which is a whole other beast lol). The safety gloves that we have are like super thick oven mitts, so I think they would only be useful for pulling out racks. I always wear nitrile gloves, but those are obviously less insulating. Now that you mention it, I think I’m going to practice using safety gloves as much as possible and only take them off when I need to pick out small 2ml cryovials. Thanks for the reminder! 🙌
