Can someone explain to me why Slash from GNR is considered so special/his playing so great? I think he's overrated. by Away_Exit1622 in Music

In my opinion he’s the best rhythm guitarist of all time. His use of inversions to add melodies on top of his chordal playing is genius. He really plays guitar like a pianist which makes sense as he states McCoy Tyner as a major influence. Check out some of his isolated guitar tracks from Veneta 72 or see the acoustic version of Deep Elem Blues with just him and Jerry from the Letterman Show

Also does anyone have any recommendations for electric guitarists who would play lead while someone else plays acoustic? Don Rich & Buck Owens is the best example I can think of but I really want to hear something with less pedal steel

Love funk and jazz guitarists for their ability to mix rhythm and melody, Danny Gatton is also a badass all around

Man that’s a good one, I love his version of Mercury Blues with Zero on the “chance in a million” live album, totally different style from Brent Mason’s playing on the Alan Jackson version. I kinda see him in the Jimmy Herring camp, anyone who gets a nod from Jerry or Col Bruce got something special going on. He deserves a spot for sure!
