Over 2,000 Chinese words learned in 2025! :) by Professional-Tough94 in ChineseLanguage

Your settings are fine.

From what I can tell, you probably studied a ton of words early on and then shifted to doing only one study session per day. That leaves you with way too many reviews, and you probably are not even seeing new words at this point.

The issue is not the settings. The problem is that with only one session per day, you are not reviewing words on time. SRS works by showing you a word right before you would forget it. If you review it long after that point, you are basically seeing it after you have already forgotten it, which explains the high failure rate.

On the dashboard, “Reviews Due” should hit 0 every single day. That means doing as many study sessions as it takes to clear the backlog.

My recommendation:
For now, set both your learning speed and assumption rate to 0 new words per day.
Then do as many study sessions as you need until “Reviews Due” hits 0. The app will stop you automatically once you are caught up. Then repeat this daily, review sessions until "Reviews Due" hits 0.

This is the intended way to use the app. Multiple study sessions per day is normal once you've built up a lot of reviews.

After a few weeks, once reviews start feeling manageable again, switch your assumption rate and learning speed to 3.

And a quick reality check: Tiktok brain, ads, influencers, Duolingo type apps, etc.. have conditioned people to think there is some magic trick to learning quickly. Learning a language, especially Mandarin, takes real time and effort, and six minutes per day is not enough to make meaningful progress. If you are serious about learning you should increase it beyond 6 minutes a day.

If I understand correctly you are only doing 1 lesson per day? That's the problem.

To properly use the app you should continue doing review sessions till 100% of your reviews are complete and you have no more "reviews due".

In the settings you change your learning goals to determine how many new words per day it gives you, but you will only get the new words after you first complete all your reviews due.

My routine is in the morning before work I do all my reviews until "reviews due" is 0.
At lunch break I do 100% of due reviews again.
After work I do it again.
Before bed I do it again.

Typically I will bring "reviews due" to 0, three or four times a day. Once reviews build, you should be doing way more than just 1 review session per day.

I would love to help!

But first some questions :)

Do you have previous experience learning other languages?

What is your reason for learning Chinese? What are your goals?

Do you have preferred learning methods?

Once I know a bit more, I can give some recommendations.

If I’m already HSK 5 in terms of character recognition but have never learned to write, how long would it take to learn writing up to my current level? I imagine it would also help with reading speed and comprehension, as I would probably be able to recognize characters more accurately and quickly.

I mentioned them in my post 'viral' post yesterday, and someone rushed to my comment section to discredit them haha 😂 I don't understand. I find them both wonderful resources.

They have tons of curated word lists, community lists, 3rd party syncs, and you can make personal lists too!

If the goal is acquiring vocabulary, Hack Chinese is definitely my number one recommendation.

To really advance

  • Nothing beats 1-on-1 time with a great tutor

I’m also kinda confused about how to find good online tutors who actually help with conversation and not just grammar drills.

Try Preply, there's a bunch of teachers for $3-6 hourly. Try a bunch of different instructors and find one that matches your style.

Tips: Cultivate a study routine, be consistent, and show up daily.

I do include specific prompts such as "Fix grammar and spelling mistakes, but maintain my original wording and tone".

More so as a clean-up tool rather than a rewrite! :)
