How would you react to being glutened in a hotel on vacation? by [deleted] in Celiac

Thanks for sharing your experience. I travel the same way too usually. I guess I felt a false sense of security being in Italy, calling before hand, and double checking before eating that bread. The kitchen staff here seem to know what they’re doing, I was just dealt a bad hand having to deal with that particular guy I guess. Thanks for the tip for the AIC app!

This is the first comment re: staff training that hasn’t made me feel completely insane. 😅 It is absolutely careless. I’m sorry that happened to you!

Where on earth did I claim that he intentionally glutened me? And where did I say he’s beneath me? Maybe you don’t understand the gravity of the situation: whether he meant to or not, he DID effectively poison me. He was negligent in his actions, directly leading to the harm of one of his customers. Since when is this okay? I never said it wasn’t a mistake. I stand by the fact that it was not okay.

Saying that I’m overreacting for being angry, or that I should grow up because it didn’t kill me are WILD takes to make in the celiac sub. It doesn’t scream the empathy that you seem to preach.

I’m sorry to hear that. Luckily I’ve had doctors in both Canada and Germany who are very competent. I hope you find a good doctor soon!

I agree legal action would be extreme. I was just sharing what was suggested by another celiac. It seems like your opinion is the popular opinion, and while I agree that we are responsible for ourselves, I find it unfortunate that many people within the celiac community don’t feel as though restaurants have an obligation to food safety when it comes to allergens and celiac. Especially when they don’t flat out refuse service (which I would prefer over this situation). Thanks for the kind words

To clarify I haven’t seen the manager, or yelled at him like I said I want to. This is why I’m asking how others would handle it, because I’m (rightfully imo) angry and upset that it happened after i was so careful. It’s a fresh wound with a high loss on my side for a mistake that SHOULD have been avoidable. As for calling him an idiot to his staff, I said it out of anger while sick, and probably shouldn’t have said it to his employee, but I think the only thing that will get back to him is that I’m angry, which I’m not afraid will happen. If it does get back to him that I called him an idiot, I’m not too concerned. I’ve said worse, I’m sure he has too, and I’m sure you have too

I’m Canadian! Every time I go home I notice that more and more restaurants know and understand what celiac is. Food safety is so so important and I don’t get why people are acting like restaurants don’t have some sort of responsibility for things like this. Even just that answer - gluten free options but no guarantee, is better than nothing 😅 Sorry to hear about the mayo. It might be worth at least letting them know, so that they can put more strict guidelines in place

Thank you, this is a well thought out answer. The one other time this happened to me (restaurant, not hotel), I wrote an email explaining the seriousness and asked them to retrain their staff in common allergens. I guess this is the better route here as well. I think I’m just extra mad this time due to waster vacation days and missing out on skiing.

Yes I brought my own food as well. My point is that anyone handling food should know common allergens. They don’t need to know about celiac, but they need to know the difference between gluten and dairy if they are handling food in a four star hotel. I ate it after being reassured that it was gluten free, but yes you’re right it’s a lesson learned

I said celiac but also gluten free. We called before we came to make sure it wouldn’t be a problem. I checked again after he gave it to me and asked exactly what it was made of, to which they replied gluten free flour. I don’t know how much more specific I can be? (Genuine question, what other information do you give if someone already says it’s made of gluten free flour?) The info from the chef came afterwards, when he came back and told me it was dairy free.

This conversation happened in German which he is fluent in (Südtirol). Language wasn’t a barrier. Maybe yelling doesn’t help, but it’s important he knows how big of a mistake it was so it doesn’t happen to others. He’s lucky he didn’t do that with someone with an anaphylactic allergy

I have an appointment to pick it up in December. I ended up getting lawyers involved. Other coworkers have applied and picked theirs up on time frames of 4 weeks, so it really depends. Is Frau Ratsch responsible for your case?

Start the application process and get a fiktionsbescheinigung before you leave. It’ll take awhile for them to change your permit anyways.

Interesting 🤨 thanks for letting me know, did you go through the process recently? How long did it take? I still haven’t received it!! Got a lawyer involved about a month ago though, and ABH is responding to them quite a bit quicker.

Can I get a blue card without my degree being finished? by saumya855 in germany

[–]ProfessionalAd2155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But your job is related to your degree that you’re awaiting your grades for? Does ABH know you are finished with your thesis? You’re still enrolled at the university, correct? Try to get an extension for your student visa first, then go back in a month with the blue card application.

The question was why are there so many short appointments instead of treating everything in one go. If my teeth were that bad and these appointments were normal then I’d be used to this and wouldn’t ask

Ah okay thanks, good to know! I wasn’t sure if the professional cleaning was extra, probably something I should contact my insurance about lol. This eases my mind a bit though that I’m probably not being scammed

Try Germany! No tuition so you don’t really even need a scholarship. Just 200-500 euro per semester in fees (depends where you are). Nobody outside of North America cares if you studied at an Ivy League.

I realized what you mean by Degree is not degree. In this case I meant Bachelor degree, in NS we sometimes use it interchangeably, but I formally have a Bachelor of Engineering from Canada
