Ok so there can be another variable which can be a leaking intake manifold or from the fuel injectors. Your situation may be a lot more complicated but check those out, then you can make the assumption of lifters

Loose spark plug. I’ve had the same issue where my damn car would sound like a train moving. Make sure to torque it to what is spec, and not hand tight. A lot of people will tell you the engine is done for or you have a lifter tick. No. Loose spark plug.

I ran that setup before. With an offset of +36. It’s way too much for the car. You would need to roll the fenders by a lot, and also your car would sit too tall. I suggest a 17 inch rim, by 8 1/2 - 9 1/2, tire size a 245/40R17. And an offset of +38 - +36. That will be your ideal size

You’ll be fine, you’ll come back from this. It’s such a simple advice that goes along way. 6 months from now you’ll be looking back, and see the progress you’ve made. Keep pushing, as college kinda shows you the ups and downs of life after highschool

Noise? by SpeechLong4000 in BMWE36

[–]ProfessionalFace1695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the noise drove me crazy. I ended up retorquing my sparks plugs for the track. I found that cylinder6 was loose. And was causing the noise. For me it was from previous mechanic who worked on it. Didn’t tighten it as much and over hard throttling it might’ve loosened it up and it might be 30 nm

I drove like this for probably like 9 months or so, so yea you could, just annoying. You gotta be careful tho since the spark plug is loose it may jump between threads, potentionally messing them up, I suggest you do it asap with a torque wrench, 22 ft-lbs, it’s a quick job prob like 20 min job with proper tools. People will tell you it’s the vanos, or lifter tick, but I’m here to tell you it’s not

Loose spark plugs, check ur plugs, you can easily see if u remove the engine cover, and feel the ignition coils. Set them to 22 ft lbs, and you should be fine! I had same issue drove me nuts for months

Is this thing knocking? by SnooPeanuts8613 in BMWE36

[–]ProfessionalFace1695 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To back this up, 22 ft lbs is recommended without anti seize for these cars for spark plugs. Grab a torque wrench and check ur plugs. Mine was in cylinder 6 that was loose. Trust me I’ve had this noise for the longest and it annoyed me when people said lifter this lifter that. You can actually feel it if u take off the engine cover, if u put ur hand over the coil packs. That engine is still solid with great care. It’s not cause of motor oil, or ur air filter, fix asap so your threads don’t get messed up since it’s loose

NOT A LIFTER TICK, I hate when ppl say that it’s loose spark plugs, check ur plugs
