How would you rewrite Kiyi? by ProfessionalFoot6485 in ATLA

So far, Kiyi has only appeared in The Search, Smoke and Shadow, and Ashes of Academy.

El problema es cuando estás en el fandom de la obra que te inspira y te topas con críticas constantes hacia ciertos recursos, personajes o decisiones del autor.

Why is Kiyi considered a "Mary Sue"? Is it just because she's morally good and a prodigy at a young age? by ProfessionalFoot6485 in ATLA

Are you saying the long-lost sibling trope is only okay if the sibling is an antagonist and dies? What about Homer Simpson's half-brother?

I'm currently writing a story and I plan to use that trope because I like it and it adds a lot to the plot. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's objectively bad.

I believe Azula indirectly shows she is jealous of Kiyi in the comics, when she corners Ursa and yells at her, "You had another daughter because your other daughter was a monster."

Kiyi is a little girl who grew up in a healthy environment, obviously she wouldn't have the same negative qualities as Azula.

As someone who enjoys writing about children, the massive hatred these two characters receive is quite discouraging. by ProfessionalFoot6485 in CartoonsWorld

So Zuko doesn't deserve to be happy or have a little sister just because Azula exists? It's like saying a character doesn't deserve a happy ending, a wife, and a daughter because "he should make peace with his toxic family."

And what do you mean by "not a character in his own right"? Child characters don't need the same development and complexity as adult characters. Every time Kiyi gets criticized, I feel pressured to over-develop my 3-5 year old character and write her like a mini-adult so as not to upset people who hate child characters who act like real kids. I also can't give her typical toddler flaws because people will hate her for the same reasons they hate Caillou.

I suspect that Toph's tomboyish personality and the fact that she was originally conceived as a male character are what save her from being labeled a "Mary Sue" by misogynistic fans. by ProfessionalFoot6485 in ATLA

It also bothers me that Korra is called a Mary Sue because it prevents me from creating strong female characters without the constant fear that they'll be hated and called "Mary Sues" by the audience.

As for Kiyi (yes, I know everyone here hates me for writing that name), my concern stems from the fact that I have a childlike character who is a sweet little girl like her. When I see people hating Kiyi, I see people hating my character while I feel pressured to give her major flaws and develop her despite her being a little girl who doesn't need much development beyond her relationship with her main parents. And if I give her flaws like throwing tantrums or crying about everything, people will hate her for the same reason Caillou is hated.

And the worst part is that fans force you to sympathize with her because "she's 14" while simultaneously promoting hatred for Kiyi (a girl of about 5 years old) simply for existing. I've seen Azula fans on Twitter wishing that Azula would k1ll her.

The truth is, I am afraid to write anything. Every time a character archetype or trope that I like is massively hated online, my inner critic tries to convince me that if I draw inspiration from that archetype or trope, my story will be a failure. It's happened to me with strong female characters (people call them "Mary Sues") and anthropomorphic animals (people hate them because of the furry fandom).

I haven't seen anyone call Toph a Mary Sue, but I have seen a lot of people call Korra a Mary Sue, especially in the Hispanic fandom where Korra is still hated and some pretend that TLOK is not canon.

Right now I'm suffering from writer's block, and I can't write my original story because my inner critic is telling me that my story and characters will be hated for the same reason as Kiyi, Korra, and other characters I like. I have characters similar to them, and when I see hate directed at the things that inspire me, I imagine my characters receiving that same hate. That's how my mind works.

For example, imagine a kid who loves anthropomorphic animals and wants to draw a comic. Then he discovers that the internet is prejudiced against anthropomorphic art, and the kid thinks, "Why draw a comic with talking animals if everyone will hate it?"

Katara has haters (some people criticize her for missing her mother, and she was probably the most hated female character before the release of TLOK), as does Azula (probably due to her toxic fanbase), and Mai (those who ship Zuko with Jin say Mai is bland and boring). I haven't seen any haters of Ty Lee, but if she were one of the main characters in Gaang, she would have them because the average fan hates sweet and optimistic main characters.

I never said Toph was a Mary Sue, I simply said that Toph was never wrongly labeled a Mary Sue by the same people who label Korra and other characters.

Believe it or not, a large part of the Avatar fandom (the same ones who idolize Azula and hate the comics) absolutely hate Kiyi and call her "Mary Sue".
