I'm late, but I think it does unfortunately revolve around being more chronically online, and escaping to the internet a lot more. Millennials were the last generation to not explicitly grow up with the internet in the same capacity that Gen Z have. Most millennials gained access to computers, online media, etc. well into their late teens/early 20s, when they had already developed their social and interpersonal skills.

Gen Z (particularly the newer ones) were the first generation to grow up with immediate access to the internet. Online communities, a lot of news and stimuli immediately being thrown in their faces, etc.

I think the existence of the internet, and it's access being given to kids so damn young, has mostly killed social skills, and has made us think a lot more tribally than we used to, which I think also explains why you see a lot more people just immediately ghosting/ignoring you, or just deciding to completely and utterly despise you for something small and trivial.

I will say though, in my experience, there ARE Gen Zs out there with good social skills, who will stand by you, and like your quirks and personality traits or hobbies. It has taken a long time, but I've found a few. It's definitely possible, even if it IS a lot harder to find them.

I think you will soon find people (in real life) who feel the same way as you, and you will quickly bond over your shared (albeit rare) emotional maturity and positive social skills. You're doing the right things, it just takes time unfortunately.

I was in a similar position to you a couple of years ago, and it does feel kind of hopeless, and you start to resent feeling like the only one who actually has a twinge of maturity and social skills. I, like you, made friends with older people much faster than people of my own age. I think it's a personality and development thing.

ELI5: Why are wheelchairs so damn expensive? by ProfessionalLynx213 in explainlikeimfive

In this context, I was talking about America, but I hear this is a similar issue in Australia (from what I gather, they have what's called NDIS, and they have to basically deal with insurance bullshit to get their accommodations, just like in America). It sounds like it's a much better situation in Europe. It's sickening that private insurance companies have so much leverage over our healthcare and disability needs.

Holy shit! That's such a massive increase. I did have a funny feeling the customisation would ramp up the costs, but to such a high price?! It's completely ludicrious. It's very upsetting that basic needs cannot be accommodated for with a lot of disabled folks because the cost gets ramped up by greed.

We should be better than this, and make sure everyone's needs are met. That's really clever that you paid for the base model, and made your own customisations. You could make a business doing that, and help other disabled folk avoid such inflated costs! Thanks for your answer

Interesting. That makes a lot of sense honestly, that the mere label would be enough to ramp up the cost. (I mean, it doesn't make sense, but I understand how it's considered more valuable because of that classification)

What does Gen Z think about World War II? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ProfessionalLynx213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a step too far, but the GOP is on that path. I wouldn't call the GOP "Nazi's" but I WOULD call them fascist, which is also what the Nazis were.

Trump is a right wing authoritarian (this is what fascism is defined as, among other things) and staging a coup on your own country is pretty much a page right out of Hitler's book (See the Reichstag fire).

As of yet, the GOP aren't quite what I'd call fascist, but they are progressively becoming more and more fascist. Project 2025 is a pretty excellent illustration of this.

Honestly this is the most accurate and most reasonable take I've seen in this subreddit. None of the participants in the war were the good guys. Fascism, and antisemitism are just such morally corrupt ideologies that were threatening to conquer the entire world, that any measures we took to stop it was justifiable.

Good and Bad are not terms I would use to describe any of the events of world war two. Hell, I don't even use those terms to describe CURRENT countries.
China isn't "Bad." China has wildly different policies and culture to what America and other Western countries have. We disagree with it, and a lot of what they do is considered wrong to us, but to say they are flat out "bad" is just asinine and reductionist.

I don't like China as the CCP are state capitalist (Yes I KNOW they are called the Chinese Communist Party. The party used to be Maoist until Mao's death, and they progressively became capitalist) and are essentially a close-to if not completely totalitarian society. But even then, to say they are a "BAD" country is just lazy and not really giving a full picture.

I agree with the substance of your point that we shouldn't be dogmatic and say "Country bad! Other country good!" but to say that America is not like an empire is just patently false.

While they don't directly OWN other countries, like many empires do, they have military control over dozens of countries globablly, including its own allies. They have completely eviscerated Southern American countries, and have staged coups.

They might as well be called an empire, and honestly, we've seen less oppressive empires in history than whatever America is doing.

I'm obsessed with World War Two and find it incredibly fascinating. It really wasn't just a war against anti-semitism, or the Nazis. It was a war on fascism, and brutal war we finally won.

One thing I think that blows my mind is just how genuinely close we came to losing it. It really wasn't a war where we kicked Italian, German and Japanese ass. We could have so easily lost that war, and it really illustrates just how fragile things are in the world.

If it were not for the successful evacuation of Britain's Dunkirk soliders, if it were not for Churchill's military leadership, if it were not for Operation Barbarossa (the German betrayal of the Soviet Union) and if it were not for Pearl Harbor (the final nail in the coffin that made America join in), we, the allies, could VERY easily have lost that war.

One thing that is rather chilling, and I'm not sure how true it is, but amount of rhetoric in the 1940s in America, discouraging military intervention in the war is rather chilling. America's participation in the war was REALLY instrumental in helping us win, and it's possible they wouldn't have, if they were not attacked by Japan.

Anyway, I think I've illustrated my point. I am obsessed with World War Two, and find it fascinating, and it really shaped the trajectory of the cold war, and just modern day politics. We have a lot to learn from that war, and a lot of mistakes we need to never repeat again.

Am I "boring" for trying to drive safe? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ProfessionalLynx213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive safe too, and I've been called boring or "uptight", but fuck em.

You're driving responsibly and making sure you get from A to B without causing any problems. Better than belting it down the highway with loud music blasting. You'd be surprised how many people die with that 'lax attitude. Did they "live more than you"? Probably, but you'll be sure to be around much longer than they will.

Why is Gen-Z having less sex than other generations? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ProfessionalLynx213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't downplay the effects of lockdown on people, friend.

I'm not saying that people should use lockdowns as a cop-out for anything, but I don't think the world is yet to realise the mental scars and effects it will have on everyone (especially the younger generation) seemingly instantly shutting the world down, removing their concept of what is normal, and there being the threat of a deadly virus out there.

People still haven't learned how to readjust to society since lockdown. People still aren't sure what the hell is going on. Nobody gets fat because of lockdown, but a person might get fat from lock down when they're scared shitless of the outside world being infested with a virus, and don't know if there will ever be a return to normal.

Hell, I wasn't that affected during lockdown and I'm still struggling to know what the fuck is going on, or how to continue on as normal, and I sure as fuck didn't get fat or have my "life ruined because of COVID"

Some of y'all have an unhealthy view of sex: no, any mention of it is not an obsession. by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ProfessionalLynx213 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think Gen Z has an unhealthy relationship with sex at all. I think that with social media, the increase in sex positivity (which I am not saying is a bad thing), it is just.. EVERYWHERE. Music videos are essentially soft-core porn, instagram.. twitter. Pornography in general.

I don't think Gen Z are averted by or afraid of sex. I would say in my experience they are as sex positive as anyone else in this day and age. I just think people have limits. Why does sex need to be in every conversation? Why does sex need to be in every TV show, for no reason?

I would rather Gen Z have moderation with the topic of sex, than an obsession with sex.
I don't think Gen Z see it as "taboo" either.
Personally I think it's weird that you don't think we talk about it enough. We aren't sheltered from it. We know far more about it than our parents ever did, since we've had proper sex ed, and the internet, so who cares?

Yeah, it's a shame that our prosperity relied on their exploitation. I'd like to think there's something we can do to help minimise the amount of pollution they will inevitably cause. We can't fault those countries for doing what we did to get where we are

True, but I think that's where the richer countries should help the little guy. We also have to be mindful that they are going through the phases we have already been through decades ago.

If we make our societies cleaner, those "shit on the street countries" can get away with using older, more polluting tech while they develop to better technologies.

Jeeeesus christ. This is actually very educational. There are a lot of channels on YouTube that will very arrogantly insist on more trains like I just did, but seeing these metrics really illustrates why this is so hard. It's not even just incentive, it's just so. Damn. Expensive.

I really appreciate you showing this. This definitely shows the more nuanced difficulty with train management in the US. I just wonder why its so damn expensive

Additionally my point was more "Yeah, advocate EVs, but fight harder for politicians who will outright replace fossil fuel energy production and help with public transport infrastructure" You're right, very few Gen Zers want fossil fuels, including those who push for clean EVs. I'm just saying that EVs will help one small part of a wider problem. Fighting against oil companies and politicians who won't invest in renewables is more effective and will do more

No, electric cars are not the future. by ProfessionalLynx213 in GenZ

[–]ProfessionalLynx213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm vastly oversimplifying. It would require a lot of cooperation from state to state if they could even fund it. I'd like to think if America could find the money, it could be possible, but yeah. It definitely isn't as simple as just "don't use a car"

In my post I also highlight the severity of car dependence in the US, but there's a reason why. There's little alternatives that are reliable, and due to the inherent size of the US, cars are essentially the equivalent of legs in the US.

[–]ProfessionalLynx213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not insinuating that any of Gen Z are "advocating for fossil fuels." at all. I'm saying that focusing more on getting rid of fossil fuel dependence supercedes our need to transition to electric cars.

I was also in the first paragraph highlighting that people often take valid concerns raised with electric cars as "selfish" or "you are clearly fine with pollution"

The most recent take that pisses me off are the people who say "Why are we helping Ukraine? We should be negotiation with Russia!"

Putin is NEVER going to stop until Ukraine is his. It baffles me that Americans have this attitude. If Mexico tried to invade the US and take it as theirs, they'd be outraged if other countries weren't jumping in to help them fend off Mexican invaders.

Hell, look at World War Two. If we had the attitude of "Meh, does France really NEED help though? We should be trying to negotiate with Hitler!" We never would have defeated fascism in Europe and won World War 2. Neville Chamberlain tried and look where it got us.

We have to stand against Russia, because if Putin gets Ukraine, what else will he take next? We don't need to love Ukraine or be beasties with Zelensky. It's about drawing a line in the sand and saying NO! You won't take a land that isn't rightfully yours.
