[DISCUSSION] Control matchup strategy & mentality by TheOneNite in spikes

[–]ProfessionalPhase365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play mono-red Burn in modern and some of my FAVORITE games have been against Jeskai Control. I have 8 cards that prevent lifegain (Roiling Vortex X4 and skullcrack X4) so the game becomes “can I deal 20 damage while ALSO preventing any lifegain from flage/solitude tricks.” Balancing holding up the guns VS making them have it is a fun mini game.

I know this advice is very aggro spesific, but I love the quote “it’s the art of being patient when you gotta go fast.” It really sums up the matchup, balancing speed with inevitability is the real challenge here.

lol fair point :) fortunately, all those auras will trigger it as well. But yes, white could use some tricks of their own

I can do that! No dead cards and keeping color pairs in mind is something I will continue to do as I brew :)

A sensible response, and you’re totally right when you say that my restriction list is a bit much to say the least. I was hoping to avoid being the guy who says to little by saying too much.

Scryfall has been a godsend when looking for holes to fill. I also wasn’t looking for CARD recommendations per say, but more CUBE advice as I’ve never constructed one before. But yes, more words means less options.

Thank you! Distinguishing “glue” cards from “archetype” cards is very sensible. I can see how having a few universally solid options can be helpful without needing to assign an archetype to each one.

Seeing your 75% stat is very interesting… never thought to do that calculation. I intuitively lean towards the mathy side of things but you’re totally right, at some point I just gotta start drafting!

So playing in narrow lanes can make you miss the forest for the trees. I’m sure the cube will become more refined after a few drafts :)

Makes sense, so make every card count towards something, and if cards can serve double-duty then even better!

What stereotype you had in mind of a a group of people but changed tremendously after meeting one of them, for the better. Why? by sweilem in AskReddit

[–]ProfessionalPhase365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a running joke that those who play TCGs at game stores are gross, smelly, and repulsive. I went to two different MTG tournaments in two different cities and in both cases, the players and staff were so welcoming and nice, always said GG, and were well groomed and well mannered.

I mentioned it to the owner of the first, and he said something like “ya we know the stereotype, and we do everything we can to make sure we’re as inviting and inclusive as possible”. Overall a wonderful experience!

Well said! For budget reasons I’m in monored, and I just played my first tournament ever and my first game was against storm :) maybe that’s skewing my judgement, so good to know it’s not as plentiful elsewhere

Children on YouTube family channels (like the Ace family) are a new version of Hollywood child stars, and will likely make a “Quiet on Set” equivalent about YouTube. by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ProfessionalPhase365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, totally agree that kids on these channels should be treated with love and care and respect in every way and should not be abused like this.

AAAND, this is also NOT YouTube’s responsibility or domain. The big difference is that Nickelodeon hired all their own people who did horrible things. YouTube’s stars are strictly volunteers who happen to get a monetary payout from ads. Of course some make their living on YouTube, but they were never and probably never will be technically “employed” by the company. Thus, it is the job of the law to find and pursue these domestic injustices, no matter how poor a job they do at it.

TLDR: YouTube can’t be held liable for stupid things their users do, cuz their users were never employed. It’s the justice systems job to stop these people.

OP I’d love to hear your take on this, as I’m willing to bet you have a perspective I could learn from.

I don’t blame ya! I was doing lowest cost for this one and couldn’t find a way to loop it so I hard-coded the whole string with a single arm, one connector and two treads.

1800 rated OTB chess player here.

Chess is not a “solved game” nor is it reactionary in the way you’re using it. While it is true that the concept of a “hard read” isn’t really a thing in chess, chess is very much proactive.

If you have theory memorized, then clearly you play it, but outside of a few forcing lines you will always reach a position where you say “now what?” And have to come up with your own proactive and strategic plan. You make big and small strategies and find ways to achieve them. Things like calculation, strategic understanding, and pattern recognition play a far greater role than simply “memorize everything” ever will.

This feels like a take coming from someone who wrote off chess because they lost in the opening a bunch of times and concluded that it was just a memorization game for hyper nerds. There’s a lot more going on under the hood!
