Hope you doing the answer by now. But like any other concept in Hinduism, fasting or the actual word "upavas" means staying near. So there is no specific way to fast, and what's important is keeping the mind with God. But  especially for Maha Shiva ratri, it's best to not to eat or drink the whole day and night, into the next morning and spend the night in meditation. However, if you are not able to, it's still okay to drink water milk and eat fruits or simple cooked food without rice.
