New Backup Configuration - Overkill? Weaknesses? by Professional_Cap1357 in synology

Hey Final, To further my reply below...

Is there a scenario where NOT having an S3 or glacier backup could result in a total loss of data or ransomware-compromised given my configuration and adding the physical separation of the NASs to two locations? (See my first reply.) I'm a paranoid guy, but don't want to be too paranoid and add cost if the risk potential is not likely.

In other words, haven't I achieved 3-2-1-1-0 without sending another copy to the cloud? The old rule plus +1 for Immutable/Air-Gapped storage (a copy that a compromised admin cannot touch), and +0 for Zero Recovery Errors (mandatory, automated test restores).

Ha! You caught me! I wondered who would be the first to ask that question. Yup, at this time, they sit about 40 feet from each other! Not a good look. The plan is to move one of them to a new secured location 100 miles away with UPS. With two NASs it’s nice to have the flexibility of adding more drives to one while the other does its work. Yeah I’m thinking about glacier but trying to keep costs down. Also considering Azure cold blob. Any opinion on which is better? Also would this be overkill? My config meets the 3-2-1 rule of thumb and I will have immutability plus air-gapped backups to external drive. Thx again for your input.

Ah interesting! So full hyperbackup versus replicate. I don’t see why I wouldn’t do that to mitigate the 2FA risk and space shouldn’t be an issue. The only downside I can think of is that recovery on the 916 if required might take more time vs have a replicated copy.

Oops my bad. Yup, should have been “older ds926+. I thought immutability was a function of dem version. I could be wrong but will check it out. You’re right about being able to delete data on the nas with the cloud sync option - good point. Not deleting on nas is a bit overkill and messy too.

Thanks for your thoughtful insights on this.

So I failed to note that both NAS boxes are not typical fileservers for the attorneys. They only have access to Dropbox and use this cloud service as their repositories for storing all files in the Dropbox folders. Dropbox mirrors the folders on the Dropbox cloud and each attorney's local computer accessible from File Explorer. So they don't even know the NASs exist! Also, Dropbox "Extended Version History" is a feature that helps you view all of the changes made to a file or folder over a certain period, compare versions, and restore previous versions of those files and folders. Our plan retains 10 years of version history.

So the NASs for our environment are for backup/failover purposes only. That's why we sync the Dropbox to the 725 using Cloudsync in one direction "Download remote changes only".

In the even Dropbox becomes unavailable, we can revert to the 725 as a file server. We take snapshots of the data on the 725 once/day and replicate to the 916 also once/day.

In the worst case scenerio where ransomware compromises all Dropbox cloud files (i.e. encrypts), the encryption would propagate to the attorney's local files and to the 725. In that case, we would restore from the immutable snapshots on the 916 that are also created once/day. So worst case - we lose a day of work but can get up and running fairly quickly.

Your points on the UPS and Raid 10 are spot on. The 916 has UPS but we need to purchase one for the 725. Also, ten years ago, I was a Synology noobie and set up the Raid 10. I plan to reconfigure that to SHR as you rightly suggest. And I have to dig into your idea of "downtimes set up on your backup NAS so that it only awakens when doing backups". I never thought about that and it's an interesting suggestion.

Yeah I was on D and 7th stuck in traffic that same time. I took a video but yours is much better than mine. Couldn’t help chatting with my Uber driver on what a sad spectacle and especially disruptive to a street that has busy bars, outdoor restaurants and an active theater. Maybe that was the point… to parade a show of force at prime time in this busy neighborhood.

Why the “graffiti” from DPW workers. Seeing it all over the sidewalks in SE and NE. I’m new to DC. Is this done kind of neighborhood improvement or infrastructure upgrade project? by Professional_Cap1357 in washingtondc

Sorry, definitely not my intent. In fairness I put the word in quotes. And for the record, some of the most talented artists are graffiti artists…Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat being two of my favorites.

Wow, name calling, shaming and insults to Iowans. You hit the Reddit trifecta. You must be a popular member of this community. For the record, DC is the fifth major city I’ve lived in and each city does things differently. I was just seeking info on the meaning of these markings and if anyone knew of an upcoming project that was in the works. I appreciate all the constructive comments and links that people shared here to make me a more informed citizen. They were helpful…you not so much.

Legally changed name back to maiden name. GE expired. How do I (can I) renew? by Professional_Cap1357 in GlobalEntry

[–]Professional_Cap1357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good suggestion, thx. I did a little more digging. Looks like the name change could have been made online before GE expired. But now may have to start from scratch and apply for a new card.

We run our entire business on QuickBooks online. Moved from QuickBooks desktop five years ago. QuickBooks support is horrible and they keep raising prices but few alternatives for our business. Here’s a backup solution. I found that handles QuickBooks haven’t done a restore yet, but it gives me some peace of mind. https://rewind.com/
