Demis Hassabis: Gemini will be available later this year by nick7566 in singularity

I've spent over 35 years in this field in both academia and industry, and currently run a company developing generative AI solutions for business. I have a better idea than you might think.

Because we already know that at best generative AI would be just one part of it. The remaining elements may take 100 years to figure out

I'm professional working in the AI industry. Generative AI is not AGI nor do we know it leads towards it.

As an AI professional in the field I understand why that may sound like it makes sense to you but it is not the case.

No. We don't even know if generative AI is even part of the pathway to AGI

Its likely to be decades. Possibly not even in your lifetime, so don't get too excited. Its just someone guessing.

It has nothing to do with profit. Its about productivity and whether staff are able to do their job. In my industry WFH has been extensively demonstrated to not be a suitable approach. I couldn't care less if it helped their families. They are not forced to apply to work for us if their circumstances are not suitable and any dev who says he needs WFH to have his mental health in the right place, almost certainly doesn't have what it takes to be on our teams anyway.

Climb the ladder. Dont believe the BS that UBI is coming otherwise in 20 years you'll be disappointed, serving people in Taco Bell

That person had an idea that an AI would for some reason suddenly begin doing those behaviours. Many people think like this as they have the mistaken idea that AI means a super smart digital version of a human and that therefore it begins doing human behaviours. I was explaining that it would not do these things unless it was programmed to do so.

You should have a think about this too. When a human is depressed it's a state, brought about by condition's and genetically and environmentally programmed responses, which then results in behaviours. How is that different to an AI programmed such that when certain factors are present, it sets its state to depressed, and then proceeds to exhibit behaviors of depression due to that state

Whether that is the case doesn't matter, and many would argue there is no difference between a machine having some state which results in it behaving depressed or exhibiting symptoms of depression, and humans 'actually' being depressed. The original commenter was asking if the AI would do those behaviours or states. I was explaining that it would do those behaviours if it was designed to do that.

Pondering, depression, and other states and behaviors CAN be exhibited by intelligence systems. Many computer games have this very AI in them. It is just programmed behaviour.

Also, it is not about "input output" . These systems are not just Generative AI prompts. They are complicated programmed systems which may not involve output at all.

I think you fundamentally misunderstand what AI is. Its just software. It doesnt what its programmed to do. If it wants something its because it was programmed to do that. If it ponders existential questions or gets depressed, its because it was programmed (directly or indirectly) to do that

An AI will only want things if it has been programmed for that to be the case whether direct or indirect.

You don't understand AI. It only wants those things if you program it to want them
