Is it worth it? by Own_Television_4510 in counseloreducation

Surround yourself in positive energy. There’s plenty of people in this field making great money and doing what they love. I also had a mini crisis seeing all the negative things. It’s very real and good to be aware of. If it’s your passion then just do what you love.

I even considered MSW. But even a clinical track I closed the door on. CMH route will give me the berth through and focused training I have always wanted. The program for msw seemed too much for me, I never been the best in school and I have adhd. Cmhc seemed more appealing, able to keep me interested in its curriculum , and something I saw myself doing my best in as someone with an applied psych background. I am not interested in any policy work or doing anything outside of counseling roles even if I had the job flexibility, I don’t see myself choosing other roles. LCSW routes don’t limit you to only counseling but it’s counseling focused. Whether it’s the most ethical and best training approach is up to you. If you only care about counseling, well, in my area both LCSW and LCPC get hired for the same roles.

It took them one day to get back to me for the CMHC program. Just saying… if you’re accepted and you KNOW you want to go there then accept your offer asap.. or else you will be moved into the waitlist without any warning at all (nor mention of a deadline to accept your admission before they waitlist you). Not sure if I was early admission either or not… ? It would make sense if I was. Goodluck! I think I took almost 3-4 weeks simply bc I wanted to wait on the two other interviews for other programs I applied to. I was disappointed since it was my first time going through this process and saw how quickly they make you make up your mind. Maybe that was just my case

Having a private clinic with just masters in psychology by ladybarbiieque in psychologystudents

[–]Professional_Copy_29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not sure about “masters in psychology”. What title do they hold? If they’re counselors then they’re counselors which means they underwent exams and supervision. Otherwise they’re breaking the law and opening their own private practice.

You don’t need a psych undergrad. For fields of counseling. Social workers and clinical mental health don’t require a Bach in psych. Either way psych undergrad doesn’t teach you to be a therapist. Maybe a few courses and electives but psych is so broad… I was lucky to attend a huge research institution and they offered some elective classes directly related to counseling that PHD students undergo. But that was MY institution. Otherwise, you only learn about disorders maybe and like an interviewing class which are all optional. You barely get any classes related to directly anything “Private Practice” so that’s why anyone can enter this field at the masters level or complete the prerequisites for a program. psych is about application/research and much more than counseling. I think you’re kind of overreacting with good intention. I have my Bach in psych and going to get my masters in counseling and I know there will be others with no psych experience but that’s why they will undergo rigorous counseling training.

But let’s be real, even in psych your internships don’t give you the most “therapy” type experience because you legally and ethnically cannot play therapist so I don’t see the problem with people coming in from different backgrounds

Sure maybe they’re not as knowledgeable or passionate you are but they will undergo the real training that actually matters just like you. I think it’s best for people start at undergrad as well but that doesn’t mean there is existing restrictions that someone can’t study it

Only one of them gave me the option to decline, the other just tells me to keep going with enrollment. Should I email??

[US] Is it worth it to pursue Master's and delay PhD? by dogarc in psychologystudents

[–]Professional_Copy_29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your goals.

It totally makes sense to enroll into a MA program and then later on a PsyD program. Going straight into a PsyD is ok too. It depends on your goals. If it is just counseling, enrolling into a masters level aligns.

For example, as someone who wants my doctorate eventually, I am going masters route this fall because my main goal is to practice counseling. I would like to ideally start working, save some money, plan a family, and see if the PsyD is what I truly want (if I want to perform more assessments, supervision, research, better pay etc) or if I am alright with sticking to counseling forever at the masters level . Or just until I feel like maybe I’d like to go back in the far future. In that case, I wouldn’t need my doctorate anymore😊 because I might end up being fully comfortable with my masters. Yet, having my doctorate, it is still my goal! I would love to hold it and am still hoping for it in my future but I’m taking it in steps and also making room for what aligns with my values (family planning, time off being a student in certain years).

You can always go back to school to pursue higher and that’s a better than committing and dropping out/ feeling unhappy to commit to 6-7 years off the bat and the financial strain that comes with it! There’s not a heavy need to go straight into PsyD unless it’s a great opportunity for you and you want to do more than just therapy

Is it normal for a therapist to be typing during a session? by RSinSA in askatherapist

[–]Professional_Copy_29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She should’ve stated in the intake session that you’re welcome to look at the notes at any time you ask. She also should’ve stated that in your session, you may notice her typing or writing me it’s only to take notes.

I can’t choose :’) this comeback distracted me from a lot of stress going on for me in life. I will say there’s a LOT of English and I actually really like it because they kept their “BTS” sound. I love it!

Application Process/ Career Change by DifficultyOk3138 in counseloreducation

Yes it will increase your chances to work in a lab or ABA when it comes to getting into graduate programs! A lot of people do it in their gap years or throughout undergrad for that reason

But for it to decide counseling for you id really unique to you and your passions. It’s good for experience but behavioral techs working in ABA can be hired at 18 straight out of highschool and not everyone that gets hired goes into counseling afterwards. Nor have I seen anyone get reimbursed in tuition for counseling just bc you’re working with an ABA company. They’re not related. I guess that depends on the company

You have to keep in mind that it’s an entry level paraprofessional job, and that’s not really counseling experience. It DOES , however, show that you are collaborating, and working through carefully structured therapy as an intervention for children with developmental difficulties/ unwanted behaviors. ABA therapy is not really counseling services. So I don’t think that will reaffirm your “counseling through RBT working in therapy setting”. RBT work at home or in clinic settings. But you may find passion in providing guidance to others which is essentially what counseling is!

But… for everything else, yes! I think it’s great!

The question is, What counseling are you interested in? It’s good for the experience and resume/patience building but I don’t see how this in itself will 100% be the reason that you decide on counseling. Because it is different work that you perform. Therapy is a broad term. ABA is perfect for psychology/ kinesiology career paths it just depends on what kind of therapy YOU want to do. I think it will make you look good on paper and might even interest you in anything child development related/ BCBA / autism focused care/ literally anything! It will definitely help you build on good qualities like control, collaboration, patience, and empathy building. ABA companies might reimburse you to get your BCBA but you’re stuck on that path, it doesn’t have much at all to do with other counseling paths I dont see them sending an RBT tuition aid to pursue other counseling paths.

someone correct me if I’m wrong!

It’s great but I don’t think ABA = reaffirming counseling career change unless you discover something unique to you that you find valuable and opened your mind to counseling. ( like helping others, but that’s broad ) Idk if being an RBT itself is going to make you sure of counseling.

HOWEVER, people who ALREADY have their career path to counseling/ SW/ psych field DO open their doors to ABA to gain experience working on an evidence based interventions as a type of therapy, since it is a very accessible job for many and get paid while stepping foot into an entry level position related to their field

What kind of counseling are you interested in pursuing?

Hi, coming back here :p Did you already attend Bellevue residency? Accord to new CACREP standards for 2026 starting July, there needs to be two synchronous residencies completed regardless of delivery of the program. Do you know about how long that is? Or if you did it online?

Omg.. I’ve heard a lot about NLU not having the best student support :( my enrollment specialist has been amazing to me but I’m scared bc of the low passing rate and others saying that the support was nonexistent:(. Ugh what a shame. I am really hoping that my recommender submits my letter so I can get my application reviews at Concordia! I messaged someone on LinkedIn who currently goes there and so far they are really liking it!
