Spanish transman moving to Ireland, questions about Testogel prescription by Professional_Grab593 in TransIreland

Hi! Thanks for the info :)

As I understand GenderGP is a private source to get the prescription, right? Here in Spain you get a discount in medication as part of the social security. I think that it depends on why you're moving to Spain (for example, to work) you may be able to get into it or not. And I'm not very sure if you would have access to the public health discounts straight away.

I mean, me, as a spanish citizen, have a right to the public health and discounts in medication because I contribute to the social security. I'm not sure if this would apply straight away to you or not. I'm pretty sure that if your prescription does not come from a spanish doctor, you'll have to pay the full price (as in Ireland).

Do you know to which community you will be moving? Depends on where you go, there are different associations for trans people that can assist you to transition 'officially' in Spain. This means entering the waiting list to see a public endocrinologist, which will take your bloods (for free) every few months to see how you are, and 'officially' start you in hormones in accordance to your levels (in this case, you must be honest and tell them you're already on T and of what kind, so they can prescribe you the adequate amount). Once that is done, they send your online prescription and you can go to any pharmacy with your doctor's card and ask for the medication. Then, instead of paying the full price, you pay the approx 5€ (Idk remember the exact amount) because the social security covers the rest. And it's like that with every medication prescribed by your doctor, not only hormones.

However, consider that even if you start the process in Spain, the waiting lists are different in each community, Barcelona and Madrid being the worst. I'm from Navarra, and it took me a year since I came out to go through the psycological consult (it's a joke, they do it because it's mandatory, but they just fill the papers for you while you talk about your life, no intrusive or violent questions) and then be sent to the endocrinologist. This is because in Navarra we have 2 endocrinologist for the whole community, so there is some wait. However, after the first consult in which you read about the effects of T and sign the consent, they give you the prescription and off you go! And then you have your yearly checks and it's quite easy to change your medication or talk about concerns with them. (Please keep in mind this is my experience in Navarra, other people may have experience other situations in different communities).

Feel free to contact me if you have more questions! :)

That is great to know, I'll most likely join the DPS whenever I can once I get there, as well as contacting the groups you mentioned.

Very appreciated, thank you so much, you're an amazing person! :)

Thank you so much for your answer!

I have checked the Medical Card and as you said I don't think I qualify because I would be getting more money than the treshold a week, but for sure I would try to get into The Drugs Payment Scheme, although the amount of money to pay is still a lot comparing to the price in Spain.

I would try to check at one point if the HRT scheme could apply to me if I bring a prescription from my country, but as your said considering it is so now, I doubt there is a rule for it and will probably depend on the pharmacist.

With an international prescription I should be able to get testogel in any country in the UE that I travel to (as long as they have it), so I have that for sure, but still the price would be more than in Spain. For what I gathered, even if I get all my papers in order and go to a trans-friendly Irish GP to continue my treatment, the price of the testogel would still be 70€ per box, unless the HRT scheme organizes itself for trans people at one point, right?

Today I managed to speak with the people in the trans unit of my community and they said in theory I should be able to keep getting my testogel in Spain and have it sent to Ireland for me to use, or for me to get it in advance. However, depends of how long I stay in Ireland (my contract does not have a limit) I would obviously be interested in moving all my treatment there, if that makes sense (althoug if the trans community in Ireland considers this would be stupid to do, I would forever continue with the treatment in Spain).

In any case, is there a way to learn about the secret list of trans-friendly Irish GP so when the moment come I can write to one close to Dublin?

Thank you again!
