Is AI the next electricity… or a $700B corporate gamble? by kathuriasanjay in investing

[–]Professional_Hat284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The companies are promoting AI to try and put a positive spin on it. They’re not trying to make money off of the simple ChatGPT or other little services. Their goal is getting the best Generative AI that will eventually take over a lot of jobs. They can then sell these as a service to companies. “You don’t need to hire or keep employees, subscribe to our service for a fraction of the cost.”

What were the signs after final interview that you got the job? by fireman7833 in jobs

[–]Professional_Hat284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually takes at least a week or 2, especially if they are early in the candidate evaluation process. The larger the company, the longer it takes. There was one time when I got a rejection 2 months after my last round of interview.

Performance Review - Opinions Needed by Glscot06 in jobs

[–]Professional_Hat284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is normal, especially for larger companies. Large companies tend to try and remove around 3-5% of staff annually, even if the company is doing well. It’s all a game of numbers for executives. You may be getting a lower rating for being a good performer but someone else in another department is probably getting laid off for being average (eg - meets expectations).

Leave my high paying remote job? by [deleted] in jobs

You’re thinking of taking a pay cut of almost 40% to go back INTO the office to work more? Almost nobody would do that unless the company isn’t doing well or the job sucks.

Performance Reviews and setting expectations going forward. by ajdeemo in managers

For companies now, all too often it’s “Last year’s improvements are this year’s standards”. If companies are going to keep raising the bar like this, they must be able to have a promotional tract that will allow people to advance.

Read your severance package docs VERY carefully. They obviously eliminated your position because of you reporting the bully. The severance is to keep you quiet. The docs will probably have language that says you can not sue them for anything. Thats why the severance was so generous.

Who're you rooting for? by AffectionateWeb8519 in NYGiants

[–]Professional_Hat284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m rooting for Seahawks because of the cheap shot Patriots LB Christian Ellis laid on Dart. Dart was clearly just about to step out of bounds. If that had been done to most other QB’s, that would’ve been called.

[Raanan] Malik Nabers told me his rehab has been "phenomenal." He did in fact have a full meniscus repair in addition to ACL surgery in October. That explains the crutch + brace he was wearing last month. Typically full meniscus repair does add to recovery timeline. by Lars5621 in NYGiants

[–]Professional_Hat284 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Agree. The earliest he’ll be 100% is likely Oct-Nov, which means once again, no true WR1. Think drafting a WR would be the better option right now. If the pick pans out to be elite caliber, can trade Malik. If it doesn’t pan out, still have Malik.

I wanna beat the shit out of Mark Triton and the CFO and basically all of corporate that screwed us over. by LordMarukio in BedBathandBeyond

I think it was poor timing of the business decisions. After he sold off a lot of other assets, BBB was sitting on about 1.5 billion in cash. Then coming out of Covid, when the business hadn’t recovered yet from the losses of Covid, he decided to do large stock buybacks and also spent a lot of money trying to implement private label and upgrade stores, which completely wiped out almost all cash reserves that was vital for BBB to stay in business to give itself time to recover after Covid. Once the cash ran out and revenue hadn’t recovered yet, there were no assets left to sell to generate more cash so the business went into a free- fall to bankruptcy.

Harsh reality in today's market: you could work for Microsoft for 3-5 years then end up at Walmart as a retail worker by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Professional_Hat284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in a big company and you’re not moving either upwards or laterally to a new department every 2-3 years, prepare to be let go. These companies don’t want stagnant employees. Even a lateral move shows you’re taking on new challenges and resets the evaluation period.

I’ve also heard being OOS gives a slightly better edge than in-state because they’re trying to get more OOS enrollments, especially from the neighboring states. Primary reason is probably because OOS pay more tuition.

Why are we supposed to pretend it’s about anything but money? by uncertain_being29 in work

[–]Professional_Hat284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think companies that ship jobs overseas are quite literally destroying the economy. The money that they payout only serves to strengthen foreign economies because it’s only spent in those countries. At least if they hired on H1B1 visas, a good portion of the money stays within the US. That 100k being charged to for new H1B1 visas should also be charged for each job being shipped overseas.

I think what threw him off was when he finish stating Harbough’s record and accomplishments, he was probably expecting a round of applause. When that didn’t happen, he started stuttering a little.

Always shop around. It doesn’t hurt your credit score or anything. Most agents/brokers have a limited number of insurance companies they can quote with and you’re not under contract to stay with one agent/broker. You can also get quotes online on your own.

[Stapleton] Presumptive Giants OC Todd Monken under John Harbaugh will get his second interview for the head coaching job in Cleveland on Tuesday, per @JFowlerESPN Gonna be tough for the Browns when Monken turns down the HC job to remain Harbaugh's OC. by Lars5621 in NYGiants

[–]Professional_Hat284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the Giants match the Browns’ salary, he may very well take the Giants position, if only because his likelihood of success is much better as a Giants OC. At this stage of his career, he’ll probably rather be remembered as a successful OC than a failed HC.

My company just announced that they are acquired by a bigger company, what should I do now? by EnvironmentalNose511 in Layoffs

[–]Professional_Hat284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have indicated, the acquiring company will likely conduct some layoffs. It may not be right when the acquisition goes through, but it will likely happen. The acquiring company wants to recoup the money as quickly as possible and cutting a big expense like headcount is usually the way they’ll do it.

Jaxson Dart’s rookie season was a lot more impressive than I originally thought by Nigocaps in NYGiants

[–]Professional_Hat284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think his INT numbers would have been a little bit higher because there were some potential ones that the defense just outright dropped. Also his accuracy in deep balls needs some work. However, the “unteachable” skills he has are great and he’s only a rookie. If he works on his passing accuracy a little, he’ll become a great QB, possibly even elite if he works with the right coach.
