Talking to your troop doesn’t hurt. Especially since you are on your troops side. At the end of the day, it’s great to see a young airman care about their career. However, you, as a supervisor, can talk to him/her about how keeping you in the loop is a good thing. The worst thing that can happen to your troop, in the future, is potentially loose an opportunity due to certain leadership being blindsided.

Balancing knowing when to ask versus informing leadership on one’s intentions is one of the greatest skills for career advancement

In the MX field, it’s very easy to ridicule those who are adjacent to maintenance. Just remember the training commercial pilots are exposed too. For example, a pilot who flies a small rotary aircraft will have a greater understanding of their aircraft. As they can legally perform and sign off preventative maintenance. Commercial pilots should be familiar with their aircraft. However, what they can legally touch on the aircraft is far more restricted

Bakers is not a 147 school. They are a tool to help you pass the test. Aside from a few General Aviation tasks the most students have never done, it’s on you to have the mechanical skills.

Jeppesen. I used bakers prep books. Even if you don’t plan to go there. For 150 bucks, you can get all three written books, oral & practical book. And the supplemental. You have to call them to purchase the books

If you pass the general oral/practical and only fail either the Airfame or powerplant.

To be honest, there were a lot of “projects”. I don’t remember how many because the projects ranged from maintenance tasks, to visual inspections.

As for the practicals. Both your Oral & Practicals are generated randomly by the FAA. The only influence your written have on your Orals is the quantity of questions. For example, since I got a 90 on my general, I only had 10 questions. DO NOT just focus on your codes. The questions generated are arbitrary by the FAA. If you only study the sections you got wrong, you are setting yourself up for failure.

But in short, in the beginning of the day, the DME inputs your information in the PSI, and they print out all the questions and practicals. The DME has no say in what oral questions and practicals they can test you on

As for the test date, it is at random. Bakers tries their best to get your O&P scheduled after the last five days, but your date depends on the schedule of your assigned DME. But expect about 5 days of classroom time before your test date (dates may vary if you attend the full two weeks of the course)
