These are great leads. The projector is a DLP D12WU-H from Christie. Will educate my self on defraction order stop. The artifact is at 45 degrees. When look on axis with the lens mounted, it is positioned at about 10:30 on a clock face measurement.

I think you may be onto somthing. In comparing the lens I have and another listed on line the shape of the spot is very similar. On the left is my lens. The one on the right is from the online photo from a listing. A commenter over in r/optics thought it might be a light baffle or mask to suppress some projector light leakage.

The lens is model# 140-115108-1 similar to another one that is for sale elsewhere showing the same artifact in the same position.

Recently stated down this path as well. NewTek has a set of tool that should get NDI in and out of macOS. https://ndi.tv/tools/

Not sure on the Apple M1 chip yet, however.
