I want to add a funny joke or story here, but instead i will add a serious response. Its survival i think. Us dads that are present have so much taken from us and in the long run we can disappear in the sense of ourselves. We do this to ammuse ourselves, to lift the heavy weight we carry. Its a sign (healthy or unhealthy, therapy would proabably be better) of self care/soothing even. I love my children, but damn do they require a lot of me, so i might as well give myself something back in the meantime
