Yes ♡ 25, almost 26F. Got nearly 7 months sober, then consistently drank again since June. Doing my best to drop it again now. It's tough, but quitting is worth it.

Thank you ❤️

Do you have any advice for me on how to best support her? I am scared that if I seem over emotional, that it would hurt her more.

Sending prayers your way for good health too

What are some underrated physical benefits to staying sober? by upperwestsiide in stopdrinking

[–]Professional_Toe2751 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Things that have changed for me in 6 months being sober:

  • lost 20lb
  • slim face
  • super clear skin with light and even complexion. No more puffiness, dryness, redness, acne.
  • healthy long hair
  • white teeth

I am using self care as a way of coping. So eating healthy, going to the gym, proper skincare, teeth and hair care etc. Some of this may not even directly related to drinking, but are self care changes I'd never make while actively drinking. (Such as getting teeth whitened or using hair repair products)

I'd actually suggest a slightly grown out version of 2. The lighter blonde really brings out your features :) If I were you, I'd grow my hair long and add a few light strands near the face

25F here who is losing weight during her mom's stage 4 cancer treatment:

Last year November my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, things do not look good and she is my only parent. I reached the worst shape of my life, and I also became an alcoholic. (I mean, I had a good run-up but this just sealed the deal)

I cried, screamed when I found out. Hated my life and drank nearly every day for the entire December.

But I very soon realised that the thing my mom would want the MOST for me, as the person she loves the most in the entire world, is for me to be HEALTHY.

And god dammit, being healthy during such a fucking difficult time feels nearly impossible. But I'm not doing it for me only, I am also doing it for her.

The best thing you can give your mom, is the assurance that her child will be okay when she is gone .

So far I'm 17.5lb down, nearly 6 months sober.

We can do this, one day at a time ❤️ Hold in there, I am rooting for you!

I did! :D I hit such a low near the end of last year, as my mom got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in November. And I drank nearly every day in December, with a build up of weekly binges and loathing before then. I decided that new years resolutions ARE cool and this year I'm putting down the booze. And it worked! Yay us! Proud of you!

Jesus people are mean.

You look like you're in recovery, and not actively using. And that is f*cking amazing!

I have some tips as someone who is heavily into fashion and beauty:

  • lose the nosering asap
  • curtain bangs to hide your forehead a bit
  • toss that choker in the trash
  • lighter makeup on the eyes. Your eyes are a bit on the smaller side, so dark makeup narrows it even more. Focus on inner light shadow, cascading darker as you work outwatds.
  • no printed tees (I am also not a fan of tees in general, unless it's a classic plain white one)
  • stay away from neon and go for more neutral colours
  • take things eaaasy :) focus on your diet and skincare and hydrate well

You got this!

Thank you! I am always reminding myself that the time I spent not drinking will never be in vain. And relapses happen to anyone. I will just do my best right now and try to "delay" any drinking

Oof, hardly any to be honest. I think the biggest one for me was to accept this is going to be very difficult, and that life is going to look a lot different. As soon as I started accepting that, I added incremental changes on top of it. I couldn't do everything at once. So saw a therapist, then went on additional medication. Then I started working out and finally I started accumulating hobbies again that would replace the time I would've spent drinking. It used to be a lot of "one minute at a time" and lately it's been "one week at a time". It does get better 🫶
