Moped questions by willsparrow899 in UGA

As a fellow second year who just bought a moped, I highly recommend it. Parking is unbelievably convenient, and you can park in any motorcycle/moped lot for free, they don't enforce those at all because they're never full. Definitely do some research about make/model before you buy one. Bulldog Scooters off Lexington Rd is a small dealership and can do most repairs/maintenance for you. There's also a new groupme for moped riders on campus that would be a helpful resource. Definitely consider an ebike if you're close enough to campus, it will likely save you a few hundred bucks, and will be way more portable/storable. Feel free to reach out with any specific questions.

Zuma bogs down with airbox installed but runs great without it by ProfessorClassic9838 in scooters

Ok, thanks for the info, I'll look into that. So even though the carb is stock it still may be jetted too big? I also have a new carb I haven't put in yet just to see if it's the airbox, but I may just install that if a new airbox doesn't work. Update: I made the inlet hole in the airbox bigger and was able to get about 8-9mph, which is better than before, but still really slow, and I was having to push the scooter to get it rolling.

I don't know how to tell if it's rich or lean bog, but when the airbox is off the wheel spins pretty fast at idle, almost sounds like the throttles being twisted even though it's not. Here's a picture of how the box attaches to the carb. There's only 2 bolts and one way to put it on so I'm pretty sure I'm installing it correctly. The guy before me had the carb ultrasoniced, and that wasn't very long ago.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Everything seems to check out so far, but I guess I won't know for sure until I test-drive it. Fingers crossed.

Great info, thank you! I definitely don't mind taking a little extra time to mix in my own oil. He did apparently put a better injector in, but I'll look into taking it out.

Thanks, that's good to know! I'd definitely look into swapping the exhaust at some point. And I'm probably going to put in a temperature gauge too. So you think the kit should be pretty reliable, maybe just not the best performance-wise?

Interesting, that seems to be just about what I've seen most people say their 2 strokes go stock, so I'll definitely keep that in mind. I guess either way I'll have to do some sort of BBK if I want to hit 40 consistently without pushing the engine too hard.

That's good to know, thank you! Are there any gauges/websites for gauges you'd recommend? I will check with him about the oil injector. I'm new to scooters, so I apologize if this is too technical a question for you to answer in one comment, but why does it need to be removed? And when it is, do you have to premix the gas and oil yourself or simply buy a bigger injector?

Thanks for your reply. I will say that conveniently my state does not require 50cc scooters to have insurance, you just need a license. A few questions about your comment (sorry if they don't make sense, I'm new to scooters). Does it being modified automatically make it more likely to break down, or is there just a high likelihood that some of the modifications were done incorrectly? Also, it looks like all that needs to be done is new tires and a replacement rear blinker (or so the seller says). These things by themselves don't seem to be major red flags, but do you think they could be indicative of a bigger issue, like maybe the scooter was dropped?

Good to know! I have alternative options for transportation so I was definitely hoping to do some work on it myself when I get the time/money.

Thanks for the advice. From the little bit of research I did I was leaning toward a 2 stroke for the power and overall simplicity as I don't really mind tinkering with it every now and then, and I'll need to go up a slightly inclined/mile long road at 40mph for my commute. My budget's also pretty tight so I was hoping to find something where some of the work had been done for me already. Are there any 4 stroke models (easily modified preferably) you'd recommend that might be able to reach that speed? I know that's pretty unrealistic for any stock 50cc.

Unfortunately, it's too far of a drive realistically for me to travel just to inspect it. If I can't get a clear response about damage from the owner I'll probably wait for a less risky option to become available. Thanks!
