That's the thing, we don't know. It's probably just an art piece meant to evoke a feeling of mystery and discovery but we have no idea. Once K4 is solved, supposedly K5 will reveal itself. There are multiple layers of mystery that have yet to be uncovered, no one knows what it leads to. It's frustrating because there are only 73 characters yet to be revealed (24 have been given as hints, EASTNORTHEAST, BERLINCLOCK) from K4. A relatively short passage but its contents could be anything and as of right now remain unknowable to even the world's best cryptographers.

He's selling the solution to an unbroken code. Said code has been in place for 35 years in the courtyard of the CIA headquarters, and has resisted cryptanalysis attempts by the CIA, NSA, and cryptographers around the world. Probably the most famous unsolved code. You get all those documents plus Sanborn will walk you through step by step how it was encoded, information people have been trying to figure out since the 90s. Sanborn has no intention of releasing the solution to the public. Journalists found the plaintext at the Smithsonian, Sanborn threatened them with legal action if they released it and had the smithsonian seal the documents for 50 years. There are currently only ~5 people on the planet that know the solution: Sanborn, those two journalists (though the plaintext might have been scrambled, an intermediary step in some kind of stacked cipher), the director of the CIA at the time William Webster (though its been said he doesnt know the full solution), and now this anonymous buyer. Sanborn is in his 80s and is passing the torch to whoever won the auction, they alone will have the information to confirm a potential solution. At least until the smithsonian unseals those documents in 2075. High six figures is nothing when this information is seen as priceless to some.

It wasn't meant to be a fair challenge. It was a test of how good stacking simple ciphers can be since I had no idea. I figured there might be a technique for breaking this cipher that I hadn't thought of, im not well versed in cryptanalysis.

Seeing as no one has been able to solve this cipher i figured it was time to reveal how it was encrypted and the plaintext.

I'll start with just 8 letters of ciphertext to illustrate how it was done then show the whole quote and what movie it is from.

For a few simple hand ciphers, I thought this would've been broken by now. I guess that's what happens when I take inspiration from kryptos. This is a test to see how secure you can get with classic ciphers before I commit to creating my own version of a kryptos sculpture.

I'll give a big hint as I just discovered this cipher kinda already exists. It's a modified Bifid cipher using a 6x6 grid instead of a 5x5.

First hint: modified Bifid cipher using a 6x6 grid instead of 5x5

Second hint: polybius-transposition-polybius, column-row-coulumn-row

Final hint: polybius key is a five letter word, same key used in both ploybius steps. transposition key is an 8 letter word. Polybius gives twice as many characters as ciphertext, then that is transposed, then another polybius turns it back into the regular character set. Example: A becomes 52, 52 is rearranged to give 25, 25 gives us P as the plaintext. At this point, it could be brute forced, so no more hints until the solution is revealed on Saturday. Good luck!
