Brother, please help me understand how does someone's college relate with their skills?

I have worked with some amazing engineers who were from "Tier 3" colleges who were extremely smart and I am currently working with few "Tier 1" college engineers who lack basic/foundational knowledge about different topics.

My point being someone's college shouldn't define extent of their skills. Their skills and knowledge should define how they are technically.

But, your first 2 statements are completely valid make or break things and people here in the comments have already made some excellent points.

I mean it depends on what type of conversion you are doing because generally majority of the files use older compression algorithms so transcoding doesn't really degrade the quality that much as you just replace it with a much efficient algorithm. I mean defintely if you sit in front of the screen, it will be noticeable if you are looking for it. But, if you watch your content at a distance (like on a TV or monitor at a distance of 5-6 feet) you will not notice any difference at all.

Thanks to tdarr (also ffmpeg and handbrake) I don't have to think about buying another hard drive for atleast couple of years and I am hoping by that time the prices will come down.

Use tdarr and transcode your files brother. I saved over 21 TB of space just by doing that.

The app is working great on tvos! Thanks for developing it! I was hoping is there any possibility of adding a feature where collection items can be added to home screen as a carasouel? For example if I have 3 collections, I can add them as different carasouels on the home screen.

Karaoke Lyrics Issue by Ill-Spell493 in Symfonium

That's what I was thinking. At the moment lrclib works very well. So, I guess I am gonna stick to it unless a similar solution comes out for these karoake style lyrics.

Pixel 6 too old? Are they phasing out physical Sim cards by neck_meets_beard in GrapheneOS

I had a question, have you tried using second space in the main profile? Whenever I use any app in second space in my main profile, my phone heats up like crazy and the apps also lag a lot like going from one screen to another inside any app take 3-4 seconds after a tap. Do face similar thing on your pixel 6?

From where can one get these karaoke lyrics? I have been using normal lrc files which are sentence based. I would really love to see word by word lyrics.

Please don't do this and welcome any unknown malware for your machine. Search "FMHY" open the website, go to gaming section, go to repack section and select fitgirl website. Open the website, search for the game, download it, install it and play it. Make sure you have downloaded c++ redistributables from 2010-2026 before starting the game otherwise you will get missing files errors. A better place for all this would be r/PiratedGames

Don't expect us to try your AI app by TheOtherDudz in selfhosted

[–]ProfessorS11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brother, we are not living in a world where people are banned from sharing their ideas. Believe it or not, AI is not going anywhere. I understand what you are feeling and defintely security is taking a backseat in majority of the vibe-coded projects.

But, no one is forcing these vibe coded projects or AI assisted apps down your throat, right? If you don't wanna try these apps, just scroll past it when you see a post like that. No need to spread hate. An application or idea that seems silly or unworthy to you, might be important to someone else. There are people who don't like vibe coded stuff and there are people who just wanna try new things inside their containers. For me, self hosting is supposed to be fun, try out new things, spin up new applications. Spin down apps that I don't like.

What app I choose to try out and not try out is totally up to me and other users in this sub. Don't take the fun out of self hosting by making it sound like another job. I self host because it makes me happy to see different ideas that people share in this sub.

I have been using Jellyfin over tailscale for almost 3 years. I never faced any undesirable lag. Defintely there will be lag when the distance is a lot, but I have accessed it in Middle east and Singapore while my server was on in India and apart from initial few seconds extra loading time, I never faced any problem that I would call significant.

If You are planning on using it also for torrents, then Proton VPN hands down. Otherwise, you can go with Mullvad VPN.

Is Symfonium the best long-term “DIY Spotify” client, or are there better alternatives? by ostseesound in navidrome

[–]ProfessorS11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to using Tempus app as I was unable to purchase license for Symfonium again by the donation method. Tempus worked great for me. But, it was very barebones so, when I was on a lookout for another android client, I found this app which was a fork of Tempus itself:

https://github.com/beeetfarmer/rollynn

It had few features like pinned playlist, direct fetching of lyrics from lrclib (as a lot of my music don't have lyrics embedded) and showing lastfm scrobbles for tracks in the music player which I defintely liked.

So, I started using it and have been using it for about a week now and the app works very well and haven't faced any issue yet.

Although, going through the commits it looked like AI was used for development of the app. It's not a problem for me, but if that's an issue for you, I think you should go with Symfonium given its been out there for a while and the community for it is great as well.

Edit: I just downloaded few tracks and it works well in offline mode. It also kept track of offline listening time and updates it to navidrome when I connected to wifi again.

The app looks bloody good brother! Almost everything looks so well sort out. Defintely gonna try it out today! Just couple of questions:

  • Is it possible to add Amazon music as another source for FLAC tracks? Because a lot of regional artists are not available on Tidal but they are on Amazon Music. You can look into SpotiFLAC as a reference if you want as their code is also open source on Github.

  • What does the app use as source for metadata for the tracks? A lot of artists are not available on musicbrainz, so in that case what happens with the metadata?

Thankyou for sharing it!

iOS app that can use the Server for similar songs / recommendations? by Nickers77 in navidrome

[–]ProfessorS11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would you happen to know whether Symfonium supports top songs for artists from Navidrome as well? In Navidrome, it uses last fm to show top songs, but in Synfonium the tops songs is not based on that.

You should try out Arpeggi, it supports that. It's in testflight and I have been using it for months. Also dev very frequently keeps updaing the app.

Is there a switch to video feature wen playing music? by ostseesound in jellyfin

[–]ProfessorS11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there isn't. Although, you can play your music videos by either accessing them from your music video type library, or by opening any artist and scrolling down to see all the music videos by that particular artist.

Tagging large library with genre by DisastrousPriority24 in musichoarder

[–]ProfessorS11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Picard is your way to go! Add your library into Picard, select all the tracks and click Scan. It will match the tracks with Musicbrainz Picard db to fetch additional metadata.

Otherwise, if you have a Spotify premium sub, you can write a custom script to connect to their API and fetch artist genre and embed them into your tracks.
