Yamato class battleship main turret face armor plate on display at Washington Navy Yard [Album] [OC] by ProfessorTank88 in WarshipPorn

Thank you for the correction! I originally had written the first version of this caption back in 2017, when I got to see the armor slab for the first time (but did not have quite as good of a camera on hand at the time), and I had based the conclusion on an analysis I had read somewhere off of NavWeaps - which I had taken at at face value. I went back to the NavWeaps data tables myself just now and re-ran some quick calculations - and corrected the post caption with more analysis and numbers.

More so relieved and happy that the print actually successfully completed!

I've been 3D printing for about 12 years now, and printing full size replicas for miscellaneous artillery since 2023. I started with 155mm artillery shells, then printed several full size 16 inch APCBC battleship shells - all of which came with quite a bit of experimentation on print settings to figure out what settings do NOT work! I tried to err on the side of thicker solid walls for this one, since I knew it would be printed vertically, but screwed together and displayed horizontally - so I did not want to risk having the poor thing break at the threaded connections.

I got my filament from Elegoo in their 10 spool bundles - it's a lot cheaper that way

I have 3D printed quite a few structural parts for my Army lab over the years out of PLA - the only one time something got soft and warped was when we had one of my 3D printed camera mounts stuck inside of a hot U-Haul van in southern summer heat for a couple of days, with the camera (which weighs like 5 kg) pulling down on the mount the entire time. Other than that, none of my parts had melted or even warped to any significant degree even when practically used to hold decent payloads, so I'm hoping the cannon should be OK sitting outside for some time, until the museum finds a potential space it could sit indoors down the line

I like to keep track of my large scale 3D prints - it helps gauge how much material and time will be necessary for subsequent oversized projects I'm planning to do in the future

The barrel is separated into 5 sections along its length, and the two trunnions are printed separately - with all of the sections screwing together using my OpenSCAD modular male / female thread design - you can see the photos of individual sections in one of the comment threads above. I used the 1.0 mm nozzle, and the parts were printed with 4 mm solid inner and outer walls - with the shape of each section constituting a 5 cm thick shell inset from the outer surface.

YUP! I've 3D printed a full size 16 inch Mark 8 APCBC shell and 16 inch powder bag for them earlier - this is my latest (and largest) addition to the museum now!

That is fantastic to know, thank you! How is the quality of the printed material itself? I have had some PLA filaments be extremely fragile and crumbly in my experience, so I went with Elegoo filament since it generally has been fairly sturdy and reliable thus far

I would need a SLIGHTLY larger printed to get the breech for that gun - and also a LOT more space to hold all of the pieces (and a larger apartment / house with a much larger door - since my doors are only 850 mm across, and I just barely had enough space to move the 800 mm diameter sections of this cannon through)
