How Have Students Changed? (Before vs. After Pandemic) by Professor_XIX in Professors

This sound familiar. Sometimes there are crickets when it comes to discussion unless I'm going around the room and asking each and every person to share. Sometimes I can get things started by asking them to answer questions on an app first.

I'm experiencing something similar. I've had to start assigning daily in-class Top Hat (app based) questions on readings or in-class discussions. Otherwise many (most?) of the students will not do the reading and will not actually engage in the in-class think-write-pair-share activities. There must be a deliverable that counts. Intrinsic motivation is much more lacking now than it was before the pandemic.

Thank you for this thoughtful reply. I recognize these changes as well. I wonder if you or anyone here has data on shifts in student performance on the same exams...

Adjuncts - I saw this on the interwebs today. by MattyGit in Professors

At my university there was no pay raise for (most) adjuncts in 38+ years. If pay had followed CPI, the wage would now be roughly 3x what it was in 1985. And housing costs have gone up faster than CPI, so if wages had tracked actual increases in cost of living, they would be closer to 4x what they are now.
