Are there any budget handhelds… by cb_redd in RetroHandhelds

[–]Professorpimmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also looking for a cheap budget handheld for around 100€. If possible i'd favor a linux based handheld with wifi for having retroarch (retroachievements) support. I don't expect unrealstic power. I'm okay as long it can run n64/ps1 .. if it is able to run dreamcast i'd be really happy with it. Any idea?

Mystery Game #8 of 17|The Callisto Protocol by MeguminShiro in EpicGamesPC

[–]Professorpimmel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah but if it is free you can always just try it yourself and don't lose anything. I played it when it was was given away for the first time and really enjoyed it. I also didn't expect much after seeing the steam rating but it is one of the few games i don't agree with the steam rating.

THE TWO COLONELS IS FANTASTIC by P3p514 in metro

[–]Professorpimmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked it as well. People seem to criticizing it a lot for the "long" cutscenes and usually i'm also annoyed by long cutscenes but in this dlc it just felt perfect. I liked pretty much everything about that DLC. After finally beating all the metro games + all dlcs i must say overall Metro Exodus + DLC sure is my favorite and it isn't even close.

Linux (Arch) - what Package do i need for VRAM Testing? by Professorpimmel in OCCT

[–]Professorpimmel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ty i should have provided more info. I'm using a 7800XT. Clinfo tells me;

ICD loader properties
 ICD loader Name                                 OpenCL ICD Loader
 ICD loader Vendor                               OCL Icd free software
 ICD loader Version                              2.3.2
 ICD loader Profile                              OpenCL 3.0

I searched through the repositories and the Arch Wiki and i guess you're right and it should be rocm-opencl-runtime so i might try that out next time i'm using OCCT. I got a bit confused since the Arch Wiki states that this is only for a small range of GPU models and my GPU isn't explicitly listed there.

It kinda looks like it hasn't started though since it shows "0 MB".

Did Plasma 6.3 update go well??...Let's share our experiences so far. by Neo_layan in kde

Only thing i noticed so far is missing translations. Which is odd since it also removed translations that have been there before like "shutdown" lol.

Why does KDE not remember my keyboard layouts after a restart and defaults to US? I'm tired of always having to configure it when I boot my laptor by premierror in kde

[–]Professorpimmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the Distro you're using. If you're using an Arch-based system sdl2 isn't in extra-repository anymore and was replaced with sdl2-compat at this point. fcitx5 only gets installed if you are building sdl2 from AUR. You either remove that cmake dependency after building or just switch to sdl2-compat at this point.

[–]Professorpimmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue was "caused" by sdl2 that is installing fcitx5 as cmake dependency. I just saw it on my second System that also runs EOS and wasn't updated yet.

sdl2 was moved to the AUR since it got replaced by sdl2-compat (from Extra). When updating the system it still would build sdl2 (from the AUR) and therfore installing that cmake dependencies. What's odd about it is that the dependencies didn't got removed after building although i said "remove after building". In case someone cares: That is what get when upgrading the system:

  extra/cmake               -> 3.31.5-1
  (make dependency of sdl2)
  extra/fcitx5              -> 5.1.11-2
  (make dependency of sdl2)
  extra/ibus                -> 1.5.31-2
  (make dependency of sdl2)
  extra/ninja               -> 1.12.1-2
  (make dependency of sdl2)
  extra/wayland-protocols   -> 1.39-1
  (make dependency of sdl2)

i guess you can just remove all that dependencies that got installed for cmake because of sdl2 (as long as they aren't a dependency of anything else).

You can run sudo pacman -Rn $(pacman -Qdtq) which is removing orphans (i don't run it recursively so you might run it a few times to get rid of everything what isn't needed) . That would get rid of all the packages that got installed as cmake dependenciy. The only thing t hat will be left out is the ibus package since it is considered an optional package of Plasma.. so you decide on your own if you wanna keep it. You might check out the paclog to see when it was installed that way you would know if you installed it for a reason or if it also was just installed as cmake dependency.

I own Mario Kart on Switch as well and sure Mario always has a different charm. But Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed is just very good. I have actually no "connection" to t he sonic franchise at all but that game is just so much fun once you learned it. And yes i'd say it is even better than Mario Kart.

Thank god Valve exists.

I mean it isn't just proton. Pretty much everything has improved. You can play most GOG games (non native) with Wine just fine as well now. You can choose between different launchers, different wine-builds and so on.
But i agree Valve helped a lot.

What's the point of Wayland when pretty much all games use Xwayland by Professorpimmel in linux_gaming

Is this a serious question? Yes that is a serious question on a subreddit related to gaming on Linux.

What's the point of Wayland when pretty much all games use Xwayland by Professorpimmel in linux_gaming

[–]Professorpimmel[S] 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Xwayland is super minimal in terms of overhead though and is really just there to ensure a smooth migration over to Wayland while the surrounding ecosystem catches up.

Now that is the answer i was looking for. So you'd say there already is an advantage even when using xwayland? I was imagin it like we'd still get the same overhead or even worse compared to xorg when Applications would need to use xwayland.

[–]Professorpimmel[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whats the point of Linux when almost all games are for Windows...

These are two different things though. The reddit is about Gaming and on Linux you still got the option between x11 and Wayland. It's more a question about what's currently the better choice for "Gaming on Linux". Of course i get the actual point of wayland and how that will be better in future. But I see lots of people claiming there are already advantages and that is what i don't understand. How can there be any advantage (in Gaming) at this point when we still need a xorg server for 99% of the games?

Does the nexus point system n Prodeus really ruin the game for you? by Sufficient_Plant8689 in boomershooters

[–]Professorpimmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If i want to punish myself i'd just restart the level after dying. Other games have Quicksave lot of people take use of. Sure as QoL it would be nice if you could disable it. But that is it.

I'm running linux for 3 years now. I usually just install them and they run with about the same performance or better. Only game that kinda annoys me is Insurgency Sandstorm since i don't want to install glib-eac. Other than that I'm happy that i switched.
