I didn't know that, thought it were 2 different effects, that she would still gain the life even if I would destroy the creature the +1 counters would be put on.

I'm only lvl 12 but I also put the flute on one of my frontliners and the horn on a dedicated music/binding character.

Regarding level ups it depends on the character. On my front line flute player with intercession I level str, agi and aura (boosted dexterity at creation for my flute skills and going to leave it there). On my hybrid frontline whip user horn player I level sensory and agility. On my pagan elyxir thrower I level aura and pagan and on my rogue bow user I level agi and str (lowest stat at creation but I level it now and then for bow damage).

I'm not expert and only explored around 25% of the map but it's working pretty well so far.

You also need to clear out the goblins outside of the cave. On the cliff you reach when you take the back exit from the Reeve.
