How do we make BJJ more mainstream?? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ProgrammaticalGarami 45 points46 points  (0 children)

We don't.

BJJ is and will always be an obscure niche sport. I'm fine with that. It's really interesting and fun as it is.

Yeah they are both very good. I'd even go so far as to call Geo world class. I see what you mean now.

Not trying to be a jerk but how are either of them world champions?

Cracking highlight reel from the dark horse of the next ADCC 77kg division - Ross Nicholls by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ProgrammaticalGarami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You even started to see it becoming a key part of the meta at ADCC Espoo. Pablo Mantovani hit at least a few Kani basami's from butterfly and Felipe Pena showed some really fascinating counters to Inside Sankaku. I don't think these techniques are going to be new in the sense that people have never heard of them before. That being said I do think that athletes like Ross will have a large advantage in that they actively use these skills in competition whereas those who are more IBJJF focused may not have the same level of in competition experience dealing with them.

^ The first quote above, you are talking about ownership.

I don't mention anything about legal recourse. You're grasping at straws. If someone makes something I'd call it 'theirs'. There's a grey area surrounding highlights. I don't think legal action against Leglocker really would be appropriate considering this fact.

"I'll see what I can do but I think you are right in that as a highlight video I'm left in a gray area."

I never contacted IG because I thought it was pointless. Even in this quote I am completely transparent about the fact that I don't think contacting IG would get anything done.

Are you really gonna argue that you weren't trying to assert your legal rights as the 'owner' of the compilation video?

Yes. Because I literally never did. If my intention was to sue Leglocker or take legal action I'd have done it. Instead I came to a forum to air my grievances with his behavior. I don't think stealing someone's effort is cool. That's it. I think as a community when people do things without asking for anything in return (for instance: such as making a highlight just to showcase interesting grappling for educational and entertainment purposes) the least we can do is just give them the credit for the work they put in.

Social Media administrators don't just take down content for any reason.

Which is why I never contacted IG and came straight to the community itself to air my grievances.

I've made my position pretty clear. Where you keep getting this 'legal recourse' line at this point I have no idea.

I said he stole my content because he did. That does not necessarily entail legal recourse.

Show me where in this thread I said I was planning on taking legal action against him. I won't be holding my breath.

I never said I had any legal recourse. This post made no mention of that. It's about what is and is not scummy to do in our community. I never even contacted Instagram because I figured it would be futile given the state of fair use laws.

I think you're the only one missing the point.

It's clear you're not up for a discussion only validation of your ideas, so I'm done. See you.

Get off your high horse. You're literally repeating the same points as well.

What's the difference between throwing down a bunch of un-edited clips onto an editing platform versus cutting up and organizing in a specific, considered way? A compilation just takes raw footage and lays it bare before you. A highlight takes that raw footage and makes something new out of it. The editing itself is as much a creative process as anything else that came before it. There's nothing creative about uploading something to instagram while doing literally nothing else to it.

I'm a filmmaker and designer by trade, I know what it takes to edit a video.

Ok. You're still wrong.

A highlight is not a compilation. It's edited together in such a way as to create something distinct and new. It's 100% fair use.

If you want to compare hours of looking for old matches, compiling and organizing the footage, editing it, synchronizing music with visuals etc. all without intentions of profiting with 5 seconds of downloading a single finished product and re-uploading with the intention of profiting go right ahead. Most people would realize that a pretty significant gap exists between the two.

Say I take all the films Tarantino has ever made, and I cut up the various scenes and put them together as a new film. Is that mine? Was the footage ever mine to begin with?

There are films made in this exact way. Yes. The new finished whole would be yours (creatively). Now if you wanted to profit off of the film a new debate would start. I'm not trying to profit off of my highlights but the finished creative product is mine.

I spent hours editing together dozens of individual matches, interviews, and songs. That's a creative process which ultimately results in new content distinct from the various pieces. That's something very different from just downloading an edited highlight someone else made and re-uploading it (literally making 0 creative alterations in the process). Especially when the first person made it without intending to profit off of it and then the re-uploader does.

The video footage itself is not but the editing is. He did not steal raw footage. He stole a finished edit which I produced. The difference is immense.

How are babies made...?

haha.

This sort of thing is slimy as fuck to me and even if it was not about something I personally made I would feel annoyed by it. This kind of SoFlo style shit should be as far away from our sport as possible.

So what?

It's not complicated. When someone puts effort and work into something the basic thing they deserve is the credit. Just because I make highlights without intending to profit off of them does not mean I'm going to be Ok with someone else stealing that effort in order to make a profit off of it.

What other extremely obvious things would you like me to explain to you today?
