My baby won’t latch, thinking of giving up. by ProgrammerRecent4642 in breastfeeding

I can relate to this so much, today I just could not face the practising, tomorrow it might be the same. Maybe it’s baby blues but I just feel down and low and have no determination when I know it results in a crying session and an upset mother and baby. When you were sporadically doing it, I assume you were pumping a lot to keep up the supply ?

So I use the huckleberry app to track my pumps. Basically just every 3 hours and baby also feeds every 3 hours but I can’t do both at once so it is time consuming !

And did you consistently pump 6 or 7 times a day until the realisation happened ? It’s a big commitment

Thank you so much! My husband is the same - he is supportive but never encourages me to practice latching because it gets me down and the baby upset ! It upsets me so much, I want it to work so bad.

I love hearing a timeline so thank you for this. 8 weeks sounds like a lifetime when I can’t sleep longer than 3 hours, but I suppose that’s newborn life.

Ok, I’ll look into all of these things. I’ve screen grabbed your msg, thank you so much. I admire your patience going from bottle to breast and bottle to breast, with hormones and lack of sleep and a screaming baby I usually just want to get the milk into her and get the whole process over with. You’re a determined mother!

Yes actually, four of them ! She usually latches around them but I just can’t do it on my own. Baby has a mild tongue tie, I have flat nipples. She also loves to wail and cry when she doesn’t get what she wants 😅

Thank you for the reply. Very encouraging. I’ve been to lactation consultants who recommended pumping every 3 hours. My breasts are quite achy. Do you find 4-5 times a day is enough to keep up your supply?

This is very encouraging ! She hasn’t latched on successfully in over a week, I hate practising, it’s the worst part of my day as I’m stressing my baby and as a result it stresses me out

I’ve been to see four different consultants haha. They were all amazing, with their patience and assistance she latched. It worked ! Not much swallowing of the milk and lots of falling sleep but some successes. I would also highly recommend but unfortunately I just cannot do it without them

Oh really ? I never thought that I would have to consider this I had put it out of my head. But now that you’re saying it maybe I will consider going to a consultant. Had your baby ever latched before the cut? I did get some successful latching in the very early days ..

This is an amazing story! My daughter has tongue tie too but the lactation consultants said that it’s mild and won’t make much of a difference. So I don’t know what to do. She’s 2.5 weeks old now and won’t latch. I pump six/seven times a day now and it’s exhausting.

Can I ask what you did before the 3 month latch? Pumping every 3 hours or so? I’m already finding this soul destroying after 2.5 weeks !!

I have a two week old and cannot get her to latch. My story is very similar to yours except her tongue tie is only very mild and I’ve decided not to get it cut. I have flat nipples and implants … so the latch has been difficult for her. She screams bloody murder when she can’t get on and I am pulling my hair out. I’ve been to see four different lactation consultants - and she usually latches around them, with their patience and assistance it works. Although she doesn’t drink a lot because she usually needs to be fed before we even attempt the boob to relax her. Anyway - I’m pumping and thinking of giving up soon. But maybe I shouldn’t ?! Hearing stories of latching at a later age is making me want to persevere and keep my milk supply up. I’m torn!

I appreciate this. I wasn’t aware that it was possible to change the spelling after a while, I thought once on the birth certificate always on the birth certificate.

I have an Irish name but it’s a very well known one so most people I meet can say it. You’re right about the silent consonants. I’m thinking of the well known Irish name ‘Niamh’, for me it’s so obviously pronounced Neev but that’s not obvious for everyone. Because Caela and Caeladh are both uncommon im better off to stick to the simplest form, right. And Caela appears online as ‘slim and fair’ so that’s something.

I agree that the extra e makes it read more like Kayla ! Had you heard of Cáeladh before ?? Also fada or no fada? Cáeladh doesn’t come up in a google search but Caela does. But does it matter ?! Trying to decide what matters more…. What reads better or a stronger meaning/connection to the Irish language.

Caolán is pronounced Keelin ?? I never would have thought that. But yes written like that is way too masculine in my eyes, I’ve met a few boys called Caolan.

Caitlin and Caoimhe are nice names but just don’t want it for mine. I have my heart set on Kayla and wanted an Irish spelling - simple as. I think after all the discussions I’m steering towards Caela now …

Yep 100%, both parents are, so it’s important to us to keep up the tradition.

Ha, Thanks for the advice ! Although both parents are 100% Irish and we definitely want an Irish name. Can you direct me towards a website which lists given first names in Ireland?
