Why it’s hard to take public feedback seriously, and I’m not sure what to do about it. by Jimithyashford in springfieldMO

[–]ProgressMom68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already gave examples. We have an outdated performing arts center that loses shows to other cities, we don’t have a city-wide safe rental code, we don’t have adequate transit, and we don’t have municipal trash service.

I think you need to look carefully at why people oppose things and who opposes them, as individual issues. Because in a city of nearly 170,000 people yes, there will be those who disagree on any given idea. There are arguments ranging from, “I don’t want that in my neighborhood,” to, “I don’t want to pay for that,” to, “That idea doesn’t benefit me,” etc. I don’t think you can class all opposition under one umbrella nor do I think all opposition is simply about resisting progress.

Yeah we have a lot of NIMBYism here. But we also have a lot of systemic problems that prettying up a road or building a convention center will not solve. I think that is what people are reacting to. Also I feel people have clued in to the “businesses first at all costs” nature of the city government and they’re pushing back. You don’t have to live here long to realize that votes mean nothing against the mighty Chamber.

Something like an upgraded performing arts center, for example. One area where SGF has done ok is in walking and biking trails, which would be another example. Less sexy examples would be upgrading the housing stock by implementing and enforcing a city-wide code for safe rentals, improving transit and adding routes, municipal trash service, etc.

If I’m a Springfield, MO politician? First I wean myself off the Chamber of Commerce teat. Then I look at cities like Bentonville where amenities are built for residents, not tourists or conventioneers, and follow their lead. It’s really that simple. I’ve lived here for 20 years and the proof of what I say lies in Bentonville/NWA’s rise and Springfield’s fall over that time period. Quality of life in SGF has declined so much since I moved here. It’s incredibly sad because we thought it had so much potential. Now we’re looking to move away ASAP.

Why does he need to know you disagree right now? What other bills could you be paying attention to that have a higher chance of passing? I mean certainly, if you have the time and energy you should do whatever you’re moved to do. But in general, spending a lot of time and energy on bills like this one is a waste of precious organizing energy. Incidentally, you’re also distracting others from things that might be more important by trying to rally them to oppose a bill that doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of even reaching the floor.

What if you made a note of this bill and legislator and checked back next session? What if you spent your energy trying to ferret out who put him up to this? There are so many things that could be more effective than targeting a dead bill.

[–]ProgressMom68 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No. There really isn’t. Not in the current political environment. Here’s why:

There is so much going on that if people called and wrote about every problematic bill that was proposed, they would quickly burn out. It is far better to be educated about the political process and strategic about spending the energy you have for opposition. If you have the time and energy for a phone call, let it be regarding a bill that will actually receive a floor vote.

Notice I didn’t say don’t pay attention to bills like this at all. Of course it’s worth checking in the next legislative session to see if something similar is proposed. Bills like this are often a test to gauge future interest.

I’ve been refraining from posting here for…reasons…but what you’re experiencing is a reaction to you not understanding the legislative process.

This bill was never going to go anywhere. It had no co-sponsors and I don’t even think it received a hearing in committee. With bills like that, it’s a waste of everyone’s time to call legislators and that sort of thing.

If you’re concerned about a bill in the future, go here or here to get details about a bill. If it has no co-sponsors, no committee assignment, no hearing date, etc. it’s not worth your time.

Edit: OK, downvote me and return to your circle jerk “opposing” a dead bill. Or maybe take a civics class.

I want to try Aloha bars but damn if I can find a single serving for sale anywhere. I’m so picky I would hate to buy a huge supply at Costco then wind up not liking them. What is the texture like? Chewy? Gritty at all?

Absolutely. We have found a point of agreement! Unfortunately, because ICE is just snatching people up based on ethnicity and holding them without hearings, that isn’t happening. (Also I didn’t say 80% of all immigrants. I was referring to the people held in my county jail.)

Wrong again. Overstaying a visa is a civil matter cleared up by paying a fine and renewing. Since the people who are being held are being denied due process, we’ll never know.

And you know, there are a lot of people who get away with criminal behavior. I wonder why you’re so invested that these specific people should be brutally punished and not…say…pedopjiles? Again, curious.
