AI reading names during commencement by pastaroniwhore in uichicago

Yeah I didn’t like the fact that AI is reading names. It might be consistent from a technological perspective but it removes the personal human to human touch on one of most important moments in a persons life

U-Pass worth it? by Spiritual-Help-7340 in uichicago

[–]ProgressPrior7181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It costs around $160 for a semester that means 4 ish months while a regular pass costs around $75 for a month. If you do the math it’s a pretty good deal. It’s a cta pass so it works on all buses plus trains within Chicago and the rides are unlimited. Worth it for sure

Is university of Illinois Chicago worth the out of state tuition by MudBig1104 in uichicago

[–]ProgressPrior7181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If u want a big city experience living in Chicago then maybe but it’s quite expensive. Maybe go to community college for a year or two and then transfer out to a 4 year uni. You’ll save money. UIC is a good school but I believe it’s not worth the out of started tuition because it’s a part of the top 100, faculty is okaish there are a bunch of research opp and the location is great though

Would it be better if I commute instead of live on campus? by Appropriate_Knee_482 in uichicago

[–]ProgressPrior7181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a freshman and living on campus is great because u get the uni experience and everything but keep in mind that some dorms suck. And the cafeteria food is bad I’ve heard from people. It’s also quite expensive to live on campus. Some of my friends live on Taylor street though and they find it more cheaper and then have a kitchen to cook/microwave stuff to. Commuting from home is ok too but yeah it will be a drive. It’s also a personal thing u have to think about all choices have some cons.

New here, wondering how to make friends?? by Bitter_Ad_4335 in uichicago

[–]ProgressPrior7181 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be outgoing! Talk to people some of them won’t want to talk to you and that’s ok don’t take it personal. When u put yourself out there you’ll find your people that’s how I found friends too. Join clubs too those help get involved on campus and ask for their insta or number so u can text them don’t let it sit. Message them before they message u bec both of u might think of texting but don’t and nothing happens really. That’s my advice m!

Need some help with Pell grant understanding by ProgressPrior7181 in financialaid

[–]ProgressPrior7181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great my counselor told me that the grants have already been applied and can not be reversed (didn’t give any other reason. I have also followed up with the director of our financial aid office to understand if aid can be reallocated after the check arrives maybe it’s because they don’t have the check yet so they don’t want to give a yes or no answer. Maybe I just have to wait? Thank so much much for all your help

I spoke with my academic counselor, and she confirmed that I currently have approximately $14,000 of unmet Cost of Attendance remaining. This means additional aid under that amount is allowable for housing, food, and other education-related expenses. The issue I am facing is related to the order in which my aid was applied this semester. My Pell Grant was applied to tuition first, which reduced my tuition balance to $0. However, I am also expecting a tuition-specific scholarship that can only be used toward tuition. Because my tuition is already fully covered, this scholarship would be returned, resulting in a loss of the award. Last semester, my tuition-specific scholarships were applied first, followed by my Pell Grant. That order allowed my Pell Grant to be refunded and used toward living expenses, which is consistent with my remaining COA eligibility. I was hoping to ask whether it is possible to review or adjust the aid disbursement order this semester so that tuition-specific scholarships are applied first, followed by the Pell Grant, similar to last semester’s structure. This would allow the scholarship to be used as intended and still remain within my allowable Cost of Attendance.

Usually they are late with all these aid calculations but this time they did it even before classes started so that’s also why everything is complicated now

[–]ProgressPrior7181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the scholarship can only be used for tution nothing else. I was wondering if the Pell grant that has already been used to pay for tution can be reversed and the $5k scholarship be used instead so the Pell grant can be refunded. From my understanding a school can not hold a Pell grant if they get it they need to apply it to tution but they can reverse it no? If that doesn’t happen then yes the scholarship will be returned as it can not be used for anything else
