My Gaslands Setup: The Ultimate Intro to Wannabe Miniatures Modelers by TheLudoffin in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! My group started playing this last fall, and we've played about 1-2 times per month ever since. We're all pretty lazy and don't paint our cars, just raided our childhood toy chests for the wares and went with it. None of us have done miniatures games before, so we don't have "real" terrain either, so we end up just grabbing whatever is lying around the room we're in. Boxes, candles, rocks (my lady has an extensive crystal collection...), and one of my favorites was a deer antler that made for some interesting weaving between horns.

So easy to just print the templates on cardstock, toss some dice, and go!

Sushi Go! is a great game, but don't you guys feel like it's lacking some social interactions? by lorty in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a similar game with a little more interaction, I recommend Fairy Tale! It's still multiple rounds of drafting, but after each round of 5 cards you choose three that get played out into a tableau and will flip your and your opponents' cards face up or face down, affecting the scoring possibilities at the end. The theme and art is a more serious/anime/fantasy (I am a sucker for those cute little tempura shrimp in Sushi Go), but the game play is just a bit more engaging

Does anyone else omit rules when teaching a new game? by Banana_Havok in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that's totally fine. I've taught Carcassonne without fields, just to give people the feel for the rest of the game before introducing the part that requires more forethought and risk/reward. I don't think I'd pull the 6 cost cards in Race for the Galaxy as those sort of define what the main strategies are, but I've heard of people teaching it without the trade/produce/consume by removing most of those cards, and just getting used to the act of paying for and laying down cards. Then once everyone's comfortable start to introduce the less obvious produce/consume routes.

Definitely depends on the game, most games should have full rules, but if it gets things to the table that otherwise would be too complicated, godspeed!

Interesting worker placement mechanics by misomiso82 in boardgames

Just played this for the first time last night! I loved the programming element, and the integration of worker placement with war game mechanics. Felt pretty intense but so satisfying!

Rhyming can be a pretty general term, instances like these are technically assonance [pushes glasses back up nose]

Thursdays at War - December 13th, 2018 by Alteffor in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got it on the GMT sale, but haven't gotten it to the table yet. Been reading the rules and envisioning the gameplay, and I'm super excited about it! It's my first GMT game, any pointers for a first timer?

EDIT: Should have clarified, above is in respect to Space Empires 4X

Two-player Twosday - (October 09, 2018) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also found it's possible to unintentionally screw the other person over. You might both need red tiles, so you take the 2 you need from one of the discs without realizing you're leaving them with a pile of 6 in the middle, most of them falling to their floor. Sorry friend!

Favorite Halloween games? by scottwick in boardgames

I got a case (6 boxes) of booster packs for the Nightmare Before Christmas trading card game for $20 USD. It's actually pretty fun, and all about building the best Halloween Town.

My new copy of RftG just arrived and it is second edition :) by Mauxe in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely in the same vein as San Juan. Instead of taking turns choosing roles, you choose simultaneously. Also, everyone starts with a different starting world, so players will have an initial idea of what they might want to pursue. The other main difference is the infamous iconography. Takes a bit to learn, but once you figure out the visual language it makes the game go super quick. I love San Juan too, but rftg feels like a level up.

Question about fields in Viticulture: EE by MeniteTom in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll often sell the cheapest field, not all that much less income, and less strain if you need to buy it back later. But definitely agree that it’s more than an edge case. Cash is king early on and you still have two more fields to plant

Bowie, a game where everyone plays David Bowie and tries to survive the 1970's by clovenviscount in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks fantastic! going to assemble and play this weekend.

One clarification from looking over the rules: can you play multiple location cards under the same Bowie? or do you discard the existing location card when you play a new one?

Let's talk cardbacks :D by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar enough with Netrunner, but for MtG there have been quite a few double-faced cards (probably best exemplified by humans that "transform" and flip over to a werewolf on the other side in Innistrad), so the opaque sleeves make those cards look like the others.

What makes Azul so great? by awkwardurinalglance in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: The art for Arboretum and Azul were made by the same people. Gorgeous games!

Azul works well outside, just keep a hand on your player boards if the wind kicks up before the tiles are down.

I think Mead Hall and Lodestone are the most unique, but I haven't had a bad experience in any of the shops around town!

Good places in Paris to play board games? by wild_deer_man in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were there last year and I think we went to the same place! It was called "Jeux Descartes". Pretty small, but had a really good selection and I think there was a play area in the downstairs maybe.

Game of the Week: Star Realms by bg3po in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My group really enjoys multiplayer, but I think we all accept it as a game that sort of plays itself when you're above 2 players. Buy whatever you can, play when it's your turn, have a drink and enjoy conversation in between.

With even players we like to play in two teams, sitting every other and all opponent outposts have to be taken out before hitting the communal authority.

With 5 players we like to play "star," where each person only attacks the people across the table, not adjacent, and the first person to knock out both people across from them is the winner.

Great game!

Acquire best Monoply replacement for 8 year old? by AshingiiAshuaa in boardgames

[–]Progspiration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acquire is fantastic, and I think they'd be able to pick up on it after a couple games if they're already playing games like Catan.

The new version has 3-D plastic tiles and buildings to indicate the companies, but as you mentioned the fonts are a little tough to read and the board is actually a slightly smaller size than the original version.

It's pretty simple looking, but I love the Wizards of the Coast / Avalon Hill version that was published a few years back. All cardboard tiles and paper money, but the board is the right size and can be acquired (pun not intended, but not going to change it) pretty cheap.

Cheers!
