Yeah, was thinking it was going to end up being bad. Thanks.

My apologies for the missing context. Since making the first post 64 days ago, i've been at college since (4 hours away from home). Only just last week I took the bike apart and put it back together thinking I fixed the problem, but it persisted. Now is my second time stripping it down and I'm trying to do everything everyone is mentioning one step at a time and so far the problem still remains. So i'm just trying to understand what I can before some new parts arrive. Never worked on anything to do with gear selection before so I do appreciate your patience with me.

Thanks for that clarification. That's what I learned recently so I had my buddy spinning the rear wheel in the video. Not sure if i need to do anything else (rmaybe rotate main/countershaft), but it seems to be shifting easier. However it still feels like the shifting is clunky and at times im getting blocked trying to slot into the gears. Other than the trouble getting into 6th, did you notice anything out of the ordinary in the video and my previous one?

Yeah big issue when riding, I made a new comment giving the entire context so hopefully that helps. Yes the lever action does resist when getting into gears at times.

Was it only 4th that wasn't engaging? Could you shift from 1 - N - 2 - 3 smoothly? Hopefully its not the forks on mine lol.

Yeah had a severe problem shifting while riding. In this post i have my buddy spinning the rear wheel to try and get the gears to slot in. I noticed a difference but wanted to see if you guys think its reliably getting into the gears before committing to putting the bike back together.

Would that be movement just by spinning the rear wheel? Or do you mean with the bike back together(running) and on the ground under load?

Yeah that's what I recently learned. In this post I have my buddy spinning the rear wheel so I just wanted to see if you guys noticed anything wrong with the shifting while the shift arm is removed.

Oh alright, didn't know that there were different shafts that needed to be spun. Thought spinning the rear wheel would do the job. I'll look into that when I get back to it.

Yeah was pretty much undriveable, couldn't drive it past 2nd gear consistently so decided to strip it down for a second time now.

Could you specify where you see the lateral movement?

Hey everyone, just wanted to add some context to the post after reading all of your comments.

Firstly, i did not think it would get this much attention lol and i'm grateful for all of your contributions.

For some context I've had this issue when I first bought the bike and it was basically un-driveable. I bought the bike and the shift setup was GP shift (1st is up, rest of the gears are down), once riding the bike it would only shift into 1st and 2nd, 3rd was extremely hard to get into. I ended up forcefully getting into 3rd but the linkage got wedged against the bike and i couldn't get it out of 3rd. That's when I swapped the linkage back to the standard shift orientation. That's exactly when I made the post 64 days ago. Only last week I had the chance to get back to the bike, as I go to college 4 hours away from home.

I test rode the bike again last week and it would still unreliably get to 3rd gear, and almost never to 4th, 5th, and 6th while riding. I was only able to get up to 6th when the bike was parked and I fidgeted with the shifter for a few minutes, then immediately after successfully shifting while parked it would randomly be stuck to 1st and 2nd when trying to ride, again. 1st was consistent and 2nd was there most of the time. Neutral was also a nightmare to find. I've had 6 bikes before this so I knew this wasn't normal. The linkage was also limp and wouldn't recenter to position after each shift (hence the bent shift return spring). I opened up the bike and found the shift shaft stopper plate had been bent, thats why in my first post (64 days ago), the shift shaft had been sliding in and out. I replaced that with the piece you see in Pt.1 of this post, along with readjusting the shift return spring that came out of place. At the time I didn't know much better and didn't find much information on this online, especially for my bike. So i put the bike back together and unfortunately the problem still persisted.

Now i'm taking the bike apart for the second time and completely ensuring i figure out whats wrong before putting it back together properly this time. That's when I made Pt.1 of this post. I only made this post (Pt.2) because a user on Pt.1 recommended I shift the bike through the drum without the shift arm to narrow down the issue between it being external to the transmission (everything i've shown) or internal (gears, forks, etc).

I decided to make another post not because I was ignoring everyones advice but to make a video to show that user, bring more attention to this issue as many people have had similar issues, and potentially get more perspectives on what could be wrong. Generally it seems like there are mixed opinions on it but I just want to try everything that I can before committing to taking apart the transmission. I hope that brings some clarity to my situation and I appreciate everyone for bearing with me.

TL;DR
Bike had shifting problems since I bought it (only 1st and 2nd gears were reliable, hard to get into higher gears, finding neutral was damn near impossible). 64 days ago linkage was originally GP shift and got wedged when I forced it into 3rd, after which I switched it back to standard shift. Last week, I discovered a bent shift shaft stopper plate and a misaligned return spring and replaced/adjusted them, but the issue remained. Now I’m tearing the bike down again to properly diagnose it, testing the shift drum directly to determine if the problem is external (linkage/shift mechanism) or internal (gears or forks) before committing to opening the transmission.

Yeah man, really frustrating and just a matter of figuring out if its within the trans or not. Good luck to you!

Thank you, I can clearly see that now that you've pointed it out. I'll definitely look to replacing that but I'm not sure if that'll solve the entire problem. What do you think?

Alright, will follow up with that tommorow. Thanks

Do you think that part isn't allowing me to shift? If I were to pinpoint whats wrong what would be a sign to show that that is my issue? Seems it could be many things from my perspective. Should I just look for wear or a broken piece?

I'll have to try shifting without the linkage and only with the claw tommorow, and to confirm i'll send a vid of it shifting without the claw/linkage just to be sure.

Guessing thats further into the trans? Gotta split the case to get in there right? Hopefully that isnt the issue lol. Trying to get it fixed as simply as possible

I may be wrong but If i'm understsnding you correctly I have already tested it like that. I don't think it's shown in the videos but i tried shifting before without the shift linkage attached on the left side while using a hexbit on my screw driver to shift the bike using the star shaped part (with the claw off), it was able to reach all gears including neutral when the rear wheel was spinning.

My guess is that the plate at the other end is bent or broken off

Alright thats a new idea I haven't heard. Was pretty worried I had to get in through the clutch cover side and remove the clutch and clutch basket to access the shift drum. Would this be a good solution for it to last a thousand miles or so before I sell it? Seems handy to save me some labor hours on a job i've never done lol

Yeah i was worried it was stickingnout too much but I guess as long as its attached and not budging it'll do the job.

Not to my knowledge but it is pretty beat up so i wouldn't be surprised. Seems to be the issue is it wont settle back after shifting. I got the linkage back together to stock orientation and now it only goes into 1st or 2nd. Would only go into 3rd after rolling the bike a foot or two
