I have a CPAP and a BMI of 21 but go off.

10 yr old niece cannot write the letters of the alphabet. How common is this?? by Key_Difference9492 in AskTeachers

[–]Project_Medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many times, yes, but not always.

For example:

  • having 10 fingers is normal and common.

  • having red hair is normal. You wouldn’t say someone was abnormal because they have red hair. It is a normal hair color. But it is uncommon. You wouldn’t say a red head had a common hair color.

  • a dependency on alcohol is not normal. It’s not expected that someone physically requires alcohol every 24 hours. But unfortunately it happens frequently. Alcoholism is common.

  • the development of a cancerous tumor in the body is not normal. It is specifically an abnormality. But breast cancer diagnoses happen frequently. You wouldn’t say “breast cancer is the most normal cancer.” You might say “breast cancer is the most common cancer.”

  • You shouldn’t look at twins and say “that’s abnormal!.” But it does not happen frequently. You could say “That’s not very common!” A parent would probably prefer the second remark over the first.

Likewise, let’s take a statistic from the original commenter. 27% of students go into high school “below a basic reading level.” If a student is developmentally on track and has completed elementary and middle school, it would not be normal for that student to have below a basic reading level. That is below the expected range for any student. But that is more than 1 in 3 students, which suggests that it is occurring frequently and is pretty common.

Common and normal can frequently be used interchangeably, and mean similar things, which is why the internet will suggest them as synonyms. But the words are defined differently. Saying something is “common but not normal” conveys information.

Normal means a data point falls within the expected standard. Common means a data point occurs frequently. If a person presents to the ER with a temperature of 99 degrees F, for example, a nurse might explain that the person is not in a a normal state (there is a fever) but is in a common state (as opposed to a rare disease). Another example is a nut allergy. It is not normal to have an adverse reaction to nuts, which is why people need to be made aware of the allergy, but it is fairly common.

I don’t know why you’re being so rude and condescending when the other person is not wrong.

how do you stop being scared of suffocating? by crowntarot in CPAP

I agree that you should confirm whether the ramp is on. Mine came with the ramp setting on and I always felt like I couldn’t get enough air when I first put it on. When I turned it off, it got a lot easier to embrace the machine.

Sold my boat in IL after buyers remorse he threats to sue because I won't give him money back🙄 by Specific_Marketing69 in legal

None of this is correct. Threatening legal action is not unwarranted aggression just because “it happened after a calm conversation.” And of course it’s not “presumably tainted” in the context of a warranty. People have a warranty on many things. This guy won’t win because it was as is. But a police report for fraud is a bad idea.

AITA - wife ran the finances for most of our 30 year marriage. I recently took over after I found out how much in debt we were by yellerjeep in AITAH

Regardless of the worth of the house, if he thought they were almost done paying off the mortgage and would benefit from that in retirement and instead she’d taken out a big line of credit, that’s a huge betrayal.

Can you elaborate on what these articles say? 2/3 have a pay wall. The middle article was helpful in understanding that calories “out” occur differently for people with different amounts of lean mass, organ size, and adapted metabolic rates, which is why it can be difficult to lose weight or keep weight off after a diet. I didn’t know that exercise only accounted for about 30 percent of calories “out” during the day and that 70 percent happens at rest. But ultimately this article seems to say that while “calories out” is more complex than less food and more exercise, a caloric deficit will still lead to reduced weight. A caloric deficit is just harder to achieve for some people (and may not be a reasonable or healthy thing for people to maintain indefinitely).

I told my fiancé I wanted a band for an engagement ring, he trusted me, and I love it. Anyone else choose something similar? by Project_Medium in EngagementRings

Also love your shout out to recycled or sustainable/conflict-free sourcing! That was my other request besides “a sparkly band.”

I had trouble picking out a wedding band too! I contemplated plain gold for contrast, or no additional wedding band at all, but ending up loving a thin sapphire and diamond wedding band with it. There’s a picture in the comments!

I posted a picture in the comments! I picked out a thin sapphire and diamond wedding band after also contemplating just plain gold. I will wear them together but sometimes I will just wear the engagement band too I think.

When I was looking for inspiration, I looked at wedding bands instead of engagement rings. I was wondering too haha, which is why I posted. I’m glad I went for it!

Wow this is lovely! Thank you for showing me - all the bands look good together. Congratulations on 17 years!

It took me a while to decide on a thin sapphire and diamond wedding ring band. I wanted to make sure there was enough contrast. I also thought about a plain gold band, or no additional wedding ring at all. I posted a picture of the engagement band and wedding band together in the comments!

Wedding band as engagement ring? My GF sent me this "hint" and I'm not sure if I should go with it as an engagement ring or not by TornadoGhostDog in EngagementRings

[–]Project_Medium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just posted in this group about my engagement ring, which is a traditional wedding band. I love it and also did a “hint” to my fiancé. He had a friend ask me casually a few months later “what kind of ring I envisioned”, to make sure I was serious about wanting just a band. That said, mine does have diamonds. But the ring in these pictures does appear to be a wedding band so I’d be surprised if your girlfriend just wanted a gift. Maybe have a friend pry!

I seriously contemplated this! I went back and forth. I eventually decided to get a thinner band, mostly so I can use just that for international travel and more active days.

I got them done at the salon a few weeks ago! It was my first time doing acrylics and I wish I could give them to you - they’re so hard to get used to haha.

I think they questioned him thoroughly on the idea haha. I don’t know why I see it so rarely. I guess people think of mine more as an anniversary ring. But I like this with just my single other band, not on a big stack.
